Quick answer

A 5-day, 4-night Meghalaya trip from Guwahati costs roughly ₹10,000–14,000 per person on a backpacker budget, ₹18,000–26,000 in standard hotels with a private Dzire, ₹32,000–45,000 in premium stays with an Innova, and ₹55,000 upwards for luxury. Flights to Guwahati are extra. These are indicative 2026 ranges, twin sharing.

Key takeaways

  • Hotels and the car are about 60–70% of a Meghalaya budget; food and entry fees are the small part
  • A private Dzire runs about ₹2,800–3,500 a day and an Innova Crysta about ₹4,500–6,000 a day in 2026
  • Guwahati to Shillong costs ₹400–700 a seat in a shared taxi or ₹2,500–5,500 for a private car
  • A group of six in one Innova pays less per head than a couple in a Dzire
  • Expect 20–40% higher hotel rates over Durga Puja, Christmas and New Year; monsoon rates drop
  • All figures are indicative 2026 ranges; check current rates before you travel

The single biggest mistake we see in Meghalaya budgets is pricing the hotel and forgetting the car. In the Khasi Hills you cannot link Shillong, Sohra and Dawki on public transport in one day, so a hired vehicle is usually the second-largest line after rooms. Get those two right and the rest of the maths is small change.

Below is how the Shillong Trip Travel Desk prices a Meghalaya trip in 2026: rate cards for rooms and vehicles, the fees that catch people out, and three worked examples you can copy. Every number is an indicative range, not a quote, and all are for Indian travellers, twin sharing, starting and ending in Guwahati.

What drives the cost

A standard 5-day, 4-night loop — two nights in Shillong, one or two in Sohra (Cherrapunji), a day out to Dawki and the Umngot River — breaks down roughly like this for a couple in standard hotels:

Cost line Share of trip What moves it
Hotels (4 nights) 30–40% Tier, view, dates, Sohra vs Shillong
Private car (5 days incl. transfers) 30–35% Vehicle type, route length, season
Food 20–25% Hotel restaurants vs local eateries
Entry fees, boats, guides 5–8% Dawki boat, trek guide, caves
Tips and extras 2–5% Driver tip, parking, rain gear

Flights or trains to Guwahati sit outside this table because they depend on where you start. As a rough 2026 guide, one-way economy fares booked four to six weeks out tend to land between ₹4,000 and ₹12,000 from the metros, higher around festivals.

Hotel rates by tier

Room rates below are per room per night, for two adults, in 2026. Sohra runs 10–20% higher than Shillong at the same tier because there are fewer rooms and most sit on valley edges.

Tier Shillong Sohra (Cherrapunji) What you get
Budget ₹1,200–2,500 ₹1,500–2,800 Homestay or guesthouse, geyser, basic breakfast
Standard ₹2,500–4,500 ₹3,000–5,000 Clean 3-star type hotel, heater on request, restaurant
Premium ₹5,000–9,000 ₹6,000–10,000 Resort or boutique hotel, views, better food
Luxury ₹10,000–22,000 ₹10,000–20,000 Top resorts at Umiam or Sohra, spa, pool

For named properties, see our shortlists of the best hotels in Shillong and where to stay in Cherrapunji. In Nongriat, village homestays at the bottom of the trek are simple and cheap, typically well under ₹1,500 a head with meals; bring cash.

Vehicle rates per day

This is the line that swings budgets most. Local union rates in Shillong are fairly stable; what changes is how far you go each day.

Vehicle Seats Per day, Shillong-based sightseeing Guwahati–Shillong one way
Dzire / Etios / Amaze 4 ₹2,800–3,500 ₹2,500–3,500
Xylo / Ertiga 6 ₹3,500–4,500 ₹3,200–4,500
Innova Crysta 6–7 ₹4,500–6,000 ₹4,000–5,500
Tempo Traveller 12 ₹7,000–9,500 ₹7,000–9,000
Shared Sumo / sedan seat 1 — ₹400–700 per seat

A few things we have learned the hard way. Day rates usually include fuel, tolls and the driver's allowance, but not always parking. Dawki and Mawlynnong in one day is 170–190 km of hill road, and drivers price it at the top of the band. A car kept overnight in Sohra costs the same as a Shillong day, not less. For detail on the arrival leg, including the shared taxi stand at Paltan Bazaar, read our Guwahati to Shillong guide.

Food, fees and small spends

Meals are cheap unless every one is eaten in a resort. A plate of rice, dal and pork or chicken at a Khasi eatery in Shillong or Sohra costs ₹150–300; a café meal in Laitumkhrah or Police Bazar ₹400–800; a resort dinner ₹900–2,000 per head.

Budget these per person per day:

  • Budget: ₹500–800
  • Standard: ₹900–1,500
  • Premium: ₹1,500–2,500
  • Luxury: ₹2,500–4,000 (often partly included in room rates)

Entry fees are small but constant. Most falls, caves, viewpoints and villages charge a small fee, typically under ₹100 per person, plus parking. There is no statewide tourist fee to enter Meghalaya. The bigger items:

  • Umngot boat at Dawki or Shnongpdeng: priced per boat, not per person, so a full boat is cheapest; agree the fare at the ghat before you step in
  • Nongriat trek: small village fees; a local guide is optional and costs a few hundred to ₹1,000
  • Adventure add-ons at Shnongpdeng, such as kayaking or ziplining: ₹300–1,500 each
  • Rain gear: a ₹200–400 poncho from Police Bazar beats a soaked day

All of these are set by village councils or local operators and change with little notice, so check current status before you travel.

Rules that affect your budget

Two Meghalaya rules introduced in 2025 change how you plan. First, renting private cars to tourists for self-drive is prohibited, so the choice is a hired car with a driver or shared taxis; do not budget for a self-drive rental. Second, every hotel, homestay and resort must register guests on the state tourism app, which is one more reason to book stays that are properly listed rather than informal rooms. Neither rule adds a fee. Check current status before you travel, as registration at entry points has also been planned.

Budget, standard, premium and luxury at a glance

Here is the whole trip, per person, for 5 days and 4 nights from Guwahati, twin sharing, flights excluded. We built each band from the rate cards above.

Style Stay Transport Meals Per person (indicative 2026)
Budget Homestays, guesthouses Shared taxis + one split day-cab Local eateries ₹10,000–14,000
Standard 3-star type hotels Private Dzire, 5 days Mix of hotel and local ₹18,000–26,000
Premium Boutique hotels, valley-view resorts Private Innova Crysta Mostly hotel restaurants ₹32,000–45,000
Luxury Top resorts at Umiam and Sohra Innova Crysta, flexible hours Resort dining, spa ₹55,000–90,000

Why is this higher than the ₹15,000–20,000 you see advertised for 4-night packages? Those "from" prices usually cover rooms with breakfast and the car only. In our standard example below, rooms and car alone come to about ₹15,000 per person; lunches, dinners, fees and tips take it to the all-in figure.

Our Meghalaya on a Budget package, from ₹11,500 per person, is built for the first band, and the Luxury Meghalaya package, from ₹48,000 per person for rooms and car, anchors the last.

Worked example: a couple in standard hotels

Two people, 4 nights (2 Shillong, 2 Sohra), private Dzire for 5 days including the airport pick-up and drop.

  • Hotels: 4 nights × ₹3,500 = ₹14,000
  • Car: 5 days at an average ₹3,200 = ₹16,000
  • Meals: 2 people × 5 days × ₹1,200 = ₹12,000
  • Fees, Dawki boat, parking: ₹3,000
  • Driver tip and extras: ₹1,500

Total ₹46,500, or about ₹23,250 per person. That is the middle of the standard band. Our Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki and Mawlynnong itinerary starts from ₹16,500 per person, which covers the rooms and car part of this sum.

Worked example: a family group of six

Three couples or a family of six in one Innova Crysta, standard hotels, same route.

  • Hotels: 3 rooms × 4 nights × ₹3,500 = ₹42,000
  • Car: Innova Crysta, 5 days at ₹5,200 = ₹26,000
  • Meals: 6 × 5 × ₹1,200 = ₹36,000
  • Fees, two Dawki boats, parking: ₹6,000
  • Tip and extras: ₹2,500

Total ₹1,12,500, or about ₹18,750 per person. The car costs ₹4,300 per head here against ₹8,000 for the couple. That is why groups of five or six get the best value in Meghalaya.

Worked example: a solo backpacker

One traveller, 5 days, shared transport, dorms and homestays.

  • Shared taxi Guwahati–Shillong and back: ₹1,200
  • Dorm or homestay beds, 4 nights at ₹700–1,000: ₹3,400
  • Shared taxi Shillong–Sohra and back: ₹400
  • Nongriat homestay night with meals: included above
  • A seat in a shared Dawki day cab with other travellers: ₹1,000–1,500
  • Food, 5 days at ₹600: ₹3,000
  • Fees and boat share: ₹800

Total about ₹10,000–11,000. It works, but you give up flexibility: shared taxis leave when full and stop running by mid-afternoon.

Getting to Guwahati for less

The trip starts before Meghalaya. Guwahati (GAU) is the gateway for almost everyone, with direct flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and several smaller cities. Shillong's own airport at Umroi, about 30 km from town, has a small number of flights on smaller aircraft; fares are often higher and weather cancellations are more common than at Guwahati, so we treat it as a bonus, not a plan.

By rail, Guwahati station is served by Rajdhani and superfast trains from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai. A 3AC berth from Kolkata costs far less than a flight and saves a hotel night if you take an overnight train. From Delhi or the south the journey runs 28 to 50 hours, which eats two days of leave.

Two habits cut transport costs more than anything else: fly into Guwahati before 1 pm so you reach Shillong the same evening without an extra hotel night, and fly out after 2 pm so the last morning is not wasted.

Costs people forget

Most budgets we are sent are 10–15% short, and it is nearly always the same lines:

  • The driver's night charge. If the car stays in Sohra or Dawki overnight, some drivers add ₹300–500 for their own stay and food. Ask up front.
  • Early starts and late finishes. A day rate usually covers about 10 hours or a fixed route. Going to Laitlum for sunrise or returning late from Mawlynnong can add a few hundred rupees.
  • Heating. Budget rooms in Shillong and Sohra can charge ₹200–400 a night for a room heater from November to February.
  • Parking at Police Bazar and Ward's Lake. Small sums, but they add up across five days.
  • Airport pick-up after dark. A late arrival into Guwahati often means an extra night in the city, ₹1,800–4,000 for a decent room near the airport or station.
  • Rain days. In the monsoon, a washed-out day still costs you the car and the room. Build in one spare day from June to September.

What a package quote should include

When you compare quotes, including ours, check that each one lists the same things. A fair Meghalaya package quote names the hotels or at least the tier and area, states the vehicle type and whether it is exclusive to you, includes Guwahati airport or station pick-up and drop, and says whether breakfast only or breakfast and dinner are included. Entry fees, boat rides, guides and lunch are normally excluded, and that is fine as long as it is written down. If one quote is ₹5,000 cheaper per person, the difference is usually a smaller car, a hotel outside the town centre, or transfers missing.

When prices go up or down

Meghalaya has a clear rate calendar. The peak weeks for hotels are Durga Puja and the October holidays, the fortnight from Christmas to New Year, and long weekends; expect room rates 20–40% above the figures in our tables and book 6–8 weeks ahead. Car rates rise less, maybe ₹200–500 a day.

June to August is the other end. Heavy rain in Sohra and Mawsynram means fewer visitors and many hotels quietly discount; the falls are at their fullest, but Dawki's water turns muddy and boats may stop. Our best time to visit Meghalaya guide covers the months in detail.

Ways to save without spoiling the trip

  • Travel as five or six and share one Innova; per-head car cost roughly halves.
  • Stay two nights in Sohra instead of doing it as a day trip from Shillong; you save a 110 km round drive and see the falls in morning light.
  • Eat lunch where drivers eat. Khasi rice-and-meat plates are the best-value food in the state.
  • Skip the paid "view points" set up on private land along the Sohra road; the main public viewpoints cover the same valleys.
  • Carry cash. Village fees, homestays and boats rarely take cards, and ATMs outside Shillong can run dry.
  • Book the car and hotels together for peak weeks. In late December, drivers with free dates are as scarce as rooms, and last-minute cars cost more.
  • Travel midweek if you can. Shillong fills with weekend visitors from Guwahati, and Sunday-night rates in Sohra are often lower than Saturday's.

How we'd plan it

For most first-time visitors we suggest 4 nights split two and two, with a private Dzire for a couple or an Innova for a family. Day one is the airport to Shillong with Umiam Lake on the way. Day two is Shillong and the Laitlum Canyons. Day three moves to Sohra via Mawkdok and the falls. Day four is Nongriat on foot or an easier cave-and-falls day. Day five is Dawki and Mawlynnong, then back to Guwahati.

That is the shape of our Complete Meghalaya package stretched to six nights, or the shorter Shillong and Cherrapunji trip if you only have a long weekend. If you want the day-by-day version first, our Meghalaya 5-day itinerary lays out drive times for each leg.

Tell us your dates, group size and hotel tier on the contact page and we will send a costed plan with named hotels.

Questions people ask

01How much does a Meghalaya trip cost per person?

For 5 days and 4 nights starting in Guwahati, plan on ₹10,000–14,000 per person on a tight budget, ₹18,000–26,000 with standard hotels and a private Dzire, ₹32,000–45,000 for premium stays with an Innova, and ₹55,000 or more for luxury. These are indicative 2026 ranges for twin sharing, excluding flights or trains to Guwahati.

02What is the taxi rate per day in Meghalaya?

In 2026 a Dzire or Etios with driver usually costs ₹2,800–3,500 a day for Shillong-based sightseeing, a Xylo or Ertiga ₹3,500–4,500, and an Innova Crysta ₹4,500–6,000. Rates include fuel and the driver's allowance but not always parking or entry fees. Long days to Dawki or Mawlynnong sit at the top of each band.

03How much is a taxi from Guwahati to Shillong?

A private Dzire from Guwahati airport or station to Shillong costs about ₹2,500–3,500 one way, and an Innova about ₹4,000–5,500. A shared Sumo or sedan seat from Paltan Bazaar or the airport stand costs roughly ₹400–700. The 100 km drive takes 3 to 3.5 hours, longer in rain or evening traffic.

04Is ₹15,000 enough for a Meghalaya trip?

Yes, for 4–5 days if you travel as a pair or small group, use shared taxis from Guwahati, stay in homestays or budget hotels at ₹1,200–2,000 a room, and eat at local dhabas. Hiring one private car for the Sohra and Dawki days and splitting it keeps you inside ₹15,000 per person, excluding flights.

05How much does a honeymoon trip to Meghalaya cost?

A couple on a 5-night honeymoon with a lake or valley-view resort, a private Innova and a couple of special dinners typically spends ₹75,000–1,20,000 in total, or ₹37,000–60,000 per person. Resorts at Umiam and Sohra drive most of the cost. Flights to Guwahati are extra.

06What entry fees should I budget for in Meghalaya?

Most viewpoints, falls, caves and villages charge a small entry fee, typically under ₹100 per person, plus parking. The larger spends are an Umngot boat at Dawki or Shnongpdeng, priced per boat and agreed at the ghat, and an optional guide for the Nongriat trek. We set aside ₹1,500–3,000 per person for all of it. Check current status.

07When is Meghalaya cheapest to visit?

June to August is the cheapest period, when many hotels in Shillong and Sohra discount rooms because of heavy rain. Mid-January to February is also quieter. The costliest weeks are Durga Puja in October, the Christmas and New Year fortnight and long weekends, when rooms sell out and car rates firm up.

08Is it cheaper to book a Meghalaya package or plan it yourself?

For solo travellers using shared taxis, self-planning is usually cheaper. For couples and families needing a private car for 4–6 days, a package often costs about the same or less, because operators hold car and hotel rates. Compare like for like: hotel names, vehicle type, and whether transfers and parking are included.

09Do I need to pay any tourist fee to enter Meghalaya?

No. Meghalaya has no statewide tourist entry fee and no Inner Line Permit. Since June 2025 every hotel and homestay must register guests on the state tourism app, so carry photo ID. Registration at entry points has been planned but, as of mid-2026, no fee was announced. Check current status before you travel.
