Quick answer

Shillong is about 100 km from Guwahati city on NH6, 2.5–3.5 hours by road, and about 3–3.5 hours from the airport. A private sedan costs about Rs 2,500–3,500 one way (indicative 2026) and an Innova Crysta about Rs 4,500–6,500. Shared Sumos and buses leave from the Paltan Bazaar area near the railway station.

Key takeaways

  • Distance: about 100 km from Guwahati city and about 120 km from Guwahati airport (LGBI) to central Shillong, on NH6 via Jorabat, Nongpoh and Umiam Lake.
  • Time: 2.5–3.5 hours from the city and about 3–3.5 hours from the airport; add 30–60 minutes in heavy monsoon rain or holiday traffic.
  • Indicative 2026 one-way private taxi fares: sedan Rs 2,500–3,500, Ertiga-type Rs 3,500–4,500, Innova Crysta Rs 4,500–6,500, Tempo Traveller Rs 7,000–10,000.
  • Shared Sumos and MTC or ASTC buses leave from the Paltan Bazaar area near Guwahati railway station and arrive around Police Bazaar.
  • Helicopter links between Guwahati and Shillong have run on and off for years; treat them as subject to operation and plan on the road.
  • For sightseeing inside Meghalaya, plan on a Meghalaya-registered taxi; Assam cabs are best used for the transfer only.

Almost every Meghalaya trip we plan starts with the same 3-hour drive: out of Guwahati, up through the Khasi foothills, past Umiam Lake and into Shillong. It is one of the easiest hill transfers in India, and also one of the easiest to overpay for. Here is what the trip costs in 2026, how long it takes, and which option suits you.

Distance, route and time

Shillong sits about 100 km from Guwahati city and about 120 km from Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI). The road is NH6, the old NH40, which leaves the Guwahati bypass at Jorabat and climbs into Meghalaya.

The route in order:

  1. Guwahati airport or city to Jorabat, the junction on the Assam–Meghalaya border.
  2. Jorabat to Nongpoh, about the halfway point, with roadside restaurants and tea stops.
  3. Nongpoh to Umiam, where the road climbs past Umiam Lake at Barapani.
  4. Umiam to Shillong, the last 15 km or so, entering the city at Mawiong or through Mawlai.
Starting point Distance to central Shillong Dry-season time Monsoon or holiday time
Guwahati city (Paltan Bazaar, Khanapara) about 100 km 2.5–3.5 hours 3.5–4 hours
Guwahati airport (LGBI), 28 km from the city about 120 km 3–3.5 hours 4–4.5 hours
Kamakhya Temple about 105 km 3 hours 3.5–4 hours

The highway is wide and divided for most of the climb. The slow parts are almost always the same: the Jorabat junction, the final approach into Shillong, and any stretch where a truck has broken down on a bend.

Private taxi fares by vehicle

These are indicative one-way fares for 2026, per vehicle, including driver. They are not quotes: they move with fuel prices, season and the time of day.

Vehicle Seats (with luggage) From Guwahati city From Guwahati airport
Sedan (Dzire, Etios, Aura) 3–4 Rs 2,500 – 3,000 Rs 3,000 – 3,500
Ertiga-type MUV 5–6 Rs 3,500 – 4,000 Rs 4,000 – 4,500
Innova Crysta 5–6 Rs 4,500 – 6,000 Rs 5,000 – 6,500
Tempo Traveller 10–12 Rs 7,000 – 9,000 Rs 8,000 – 10,000

What moves the price:

  • Night pickups after about 8 pm usually cost more.
  • Festival weeks (Durga Puja, Christmas–New Year) push rates up and cut availability.
  • Waiting time for a delayed flight may be charged after the first hour.
  • Tolls and parking are sometimes excluded; ask before you pay.
  • One-way vs return. A driver heading back empty prices that into the fare. If you are returning in three or four days, ask for a return quote.

Online cab platforms often show lower headline prices. In our experience, those rates can change at confirmation, and the car that turns up may not match the category. For families and first-time visitors, a known local operator is usually the calmer option.

Shared Sumo and shared taxis

The cheapest fast option is a shared seat in a Tata Sumo, Bolero or similar vehicle.

  • Where they leave from: mainly the Paltan Bazaar area near Guwahati railway station, with some pick-ups along the Khanapara side as you leave the city.
  • Where they arrive: usually around Police Bazaar in central Shillong.
  • Indicative fare: roughly Rs 250–400 per seat in 2026.
  • When: from early morning; vehicles leave when full. Service thins out in the afternoon.

Tips: buy the front seat if you are prone to motion sickness; keep a small bag on your lap and the big bag on the roof, tied under a tarpaulin in the rain; and avoid the last vehicles of the day in winter, when the drive ends in the dark.

Some operators sell shared seats from the airport when enough passengers arrive, but availability varies and we do not plan trips around it. For more on shared vehicles across the region, see our guide to getting around the Northeast.

MTC and ASTC buses

Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) and Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) run buses between Guwahati and Shillong, and private operators run a few more.

  • Departure area: Paltan Bazaar, near Guwahati railway station.
  • Arrival: central Shillong, near Police Bazaar.
  • Indicative fare: roughly Rs 150–300.
  • Time: about 3.5–4 hours, with stops.

Buses suit solo travellers and backpackers with time. They stop running by late afternoon, so plan a morning departure.

What about the helicopter

For years, a subsidised helicopter has linked Guwahati and Shillong on and off, run by Pawan Hans with the Meghalaya government. It has been suspended and restarted several times, most recently reported as resuming in mid-2025.

When we checked in September 2026, the Pawan Hans booking portal listed no Guwahati–Shillong sector. We therefore do not sell or plan around it. If a service is running when you travel, remember:

  • flights are small, seats are few and weight limits are strict
  • low cloud cancels flights, which is common from June to September
  • you still need a car at the Shillong end, since the landing point is outside the city centre

Treat it as subject to operation and check current status before you travel. For almost everyone, the road is faster door to door once you count check-in and transfers.

What the road is like

The Guwahati–Shillong highway is one of the better mountain roads in the Northeast. From Jorabat, it climbs steadily rather than steeply, with long sweeping bends instead of tight hairpins. People who get carsick on other hill roads usually manage this one, especially from the front seat.

Things to expect along the way:

  • Trucks. This is the main freight route into Meghalaya and on to Mizoram and Tripura. Slow trucks on the climb are the biggest cause of delay.
  • Rain and cloud. From June to September, heavy showers and cloud near Umiam can slow traffic to a crawl for short stretches.
  • Landslips. Small slips happen in the monsoon, usually cleared within hours. Major closures are rare but possible after very heavy rain.
  • City entry. The last few kilometres into Shillong are narrower and busier. Police Bazaar and Laitumkhrah can take 20–30 minutes to reach from the city edge at peak hours.

Stops worth making

A good driver will suggest these without being asked.

  • Nongpoh, around the halfway mark, for tea, snacks and a washroom break. Several roadside restaurants serve simple Indian meals and local fruit, especially pineapple in season.
  • Umiam Lake viewpoints, at Barapani, about 15–17 km before Shillong. The reservoir is best in the morning; a 15–20 minute stop is enough on a transfer day.
  • Fruit stalls along the climb sell pineapples, oranges in winter and local snacks. Buy from stalls with a price board.

If you want time at Umiam itself, for boating or a lakeside lunch, plan a separate half-day from Shillong rather than squeezing it into the transfer.

Flying straight into Shillong

Shillong has its own airport at Umroi, about 30 km from the city, but it has few scheduled flights, and they are more exposed to weather cancellations than Guwahati. Most travellers, and most of our guests, find that flying into Guwahati and driving up is cheaper and more reliable. Our how to reach Shillong guide covers the Shillong airport option in detail.

Travelling with children and seniors

The transfer is manageable for most families, but a few adjustments help:

  • break the drive at Nongpoh even if no one asks
  • carry water, dry snacks and a small bag for motion sickness
  • book an MUV or Innova rather than a sedan, for legroom and luggage
  • avoid arriving after dark on the first day
  • for seniors with limited mobility, ask for a car with a lower step height

Airport pickup tips

Most of our guests land at Guwahati and drive straight up. What makes it smooth:

  1. Share your flight number, not just the time. Drivers track delays.
  2. Meet at the arrivals exit. Your driver should hold a name board; confirm the car number by message before you land.
  3. Eat at Nongpoh, not the airport. The halfway stop has simple restaurants and clean enough washrooms; it breaks the drive nicely.
  4. Plan for daylight. For flights landing after about 2 pm in winter, the last hour will be in the dark. Consider a night in Guwahati and an early start, especially with children or seniors.
  5. Add Kamakhya on the way out. Kamakhya Temple is close to the city; on the return, it fits before an evening flight if the queue is short.
  6. Keep ID handy. Since June 2025, hotels and homestays in Meghalaya must register every guest on the state tourism app, and the state has announced plans for visitor registration at entry points such as Umling on this road. Rules are still evolving, so check current status before you travel. See our Meghalaya travel rules guide.

Assam cab or Meghalaya cab

A common question: can the car that picked you up at Guwahati also take you to Sohra and Dawki?

In practice, sightseeing inside Meghalaya is normally done in Meghalaya-registered taxis. Self-drive is not an option either: since June 2025, renting private vehicles to tourists for self-drive has been prohibited in Meghalaya. Local taxi associations have objected to outside cabs doing local runs, and there have been standoffs in recent years. The simplest approach, and the one we use, is an Assam or Meghalaya car for the transfer and a Shillong car for day trips. Rules and local arrangements change, so check current status before you travel.

Which option suits you

You are Best option Why
A family or group of 4–6 Private MUV or Innova Door to door, luggage space, stops on request
A couple on a short trip Private sedan Fastest for the money; flexible timing
A solo traveller or backpacker Shared Sumo or bus Lowest cost; frequent morning departures
Landing after about 2 pm in winter A night in Guwahati, then a morning car You arrive in daylight and fresher
A corporate group of 10–12 Tempo Traveller One vehicle, one driver, one timetable

Returning to Guwahati

The return trip has one rule: leave more time than you think. We plan departures from Shillong at least 4.5 hours before a domestic flight, and 5 hours on Friday evenings, Sundays and holiday weekends. The descent is slightly quicker, but Guwahati city traffic and airport security more than make up for it.

How we'd plan it

For a first trip to Meghalaya, here is what we would do:

  • Book a private car for the airport transfer and ask for a fixed, all-inclusive fare in writing.
  • Stop at Umiam Lake for 20 minutes on the way up; it is the easiest first view of the Khasi Hills.
  • Keep day trips in a Shillong car, booked through the same operator so you have one point of contact.
  • Avoid a same-day flight and Sohra. Land, drive up, and start sightseeing the next morning.

For a short break, our Shillong Weekend package includes both transfers. For a slightly longer trip, the Shillong and Cherrapunji package or the Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki and Mawlynnong package handles cars end to end. Teams travelling together can look at our Guwahati and Shillong Team Offsite.

For more ways to arrive, see the section above; our Shillong in 3 days itinerary shows what to do once you arrive. For where to stay, see our best hotels in Shillong guide. Guwahati's own sights are worth a half-day if your flight times allow.

Send your flight details through the contact page and we will confirm a fixed transfer fare for your dates.

Questions people ask

01How much is a taxi from Guwahati to Shillong?

As an indicative 2026 guide, a one-way sedan such as a Dzire or Etios costs about Rs 2,500–3,500, an Ertiga-type SUV about Rs 3,500–4,500, and an Innova Crysta about Rs 4,500–6,500. Airport pickups sit at the higher end. Prices rise at night, on festival weekends and during Christmas–New Year. Confirm tolls and parking are included.

02How far is Shillong from Guwahati airport?

Shillong is about 120 km from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. The route crosses the city's southern edge to Jorabat, then climbs NH6 through Nongpoh and past Umiam Lake. Allow about 3–3.5 hours in normal traffic, and more on Friday evenings, festival days and in heavy rain.

03Where do shared taxis to Shillong leave from in Guwahati?

Shared Sumos and similar vehicles leave mainly from the Paltan Bazaar area near Guwahati railway station, with some pick-ups along the Khanapara side on the way out of the city. They usually arrive around Police Bazaar in Shillong. Seats cost roughly Rs 250–400 (indicative). Vehicles leave when full, so go in the morning.

04Is there a helicopter from Guwahati to Shillong?

A state-backed helicopter service has linked Guwahati and Shillong at various times, and was reported as resuming in mid-2025. When we checked in September 2026, the Pawan Hans booking portal did not list a Guwahati–Shillong sector. Treat any helicopter as subject to operation, check current status before you travel, and plan your trip on the road.

05How long does it take from Guwahati to Shillong by road?

From Guwahati city it usually takes 2.5–3.5 hours; from the airport, about 3–3.5 hours. The main delays are the Jorabat junction, the approach into Shillong at Mawiong and Mawlai, and heavy rain in the monsoon. On Christmas, New Year and long weekends, allow an extra hour each way.

06Can I take an Assam taxi for sightseeing in Meghalaya?

Assam-registered cabs regularly do the Guwahati–Shillong transfer, but local sightseeing inside Meghalaya is normally done in Meghalaya-registered taxis, and there have been disputes over this in recent years. To avoid trouble at Sohra or Dawki, use a Shillong car for day trips. Rules and local arrangements change, so check current status before you travel.

07Is there a bus from Guwahati to Shillong?

Yes. Meghalaya Transport Corporation and Assam State Transport Corporation buses run between Guwahati and Shillong, with departures from the Paltan Bazaar area near the railway station. Fares are low, roughly Rs 150–300 (indicative), and the trip takes about 3.5–4 hours. Buses stop running by late afternoon, so travel in the morning.

08Is the Guwahati to Shillong road safe at night?

The highway is wide and well used, and many cars drive it after dark. We still prefer daylight: trucks are heavy at night, cloud and fog cut visibility near Umiam in the monsoon and winter, and some stretches have few places to stop. Aim to leave Guwahati by 3 pm in winter and 4 pm in summer.

09Is there a train from Guwahati to Shillong?

No. There is no railway line to Shillong. Guwahati railway station is the nearest railhead, about 100 km away, and most travellers arriving by train take a taxi, shared Sumo or bus from Paltan Bazaar, just outside the station. Allow about 3 hours to reach central Shillong.
