In short

This 3 nights / 4 days trip from Guwahati gives you two nights in Shillong and one in Sohra (Cherrapunji), so you see Nohkalikai Falls in the clear morning light instead of the afternoon cloud. It covers Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls, Mawsmai Cave and Arwah Cave, from ₹12,500 per person with a private car.

Most short Meghalaya tours drive to Sohra and back in one day, which puts you at Nohkalikai at 2 pm, exactly when cloud tends to fill the gorge. We sleep one night on the Sohra plateau instead. You arrive in the afternoon for the Mawkdok valley and Wah Kaba Falls, and you are at the Nohkalikai viewpoint by 8 am the next morning, when the 340 m drop is most often visible.

The rest of the plan stays gentle for families: Shillong Peak and Elephant Falls in the city, a 150 m lit section of Mawsmai Cave, the Arwah Cave walkway, and the Seven Sisters viewpoint. There is no long trek on this trip; if you want the Nongriat root bridges, look at our root bridges trek or add a night.

Highlights

  • Mawkdok Dympep valley viewpoint and Wah Kaba Falls on the Shillong to Sohra road
  • Shillong Peak at 1,965 m and the three tiers of Elephant Falls
  • Short drives: nothing over 3.5 hours on any day

Day by day

Day 1Guwahati to Shillong
  • Shillong
  • 1,525 m
  • 100 km · 3–3.5 hrs
  • Dinner

We meet you at Guwahati Airport or the railway station and drive up the four-lane highway through Jorabat, Byrnihat and Nongpoh. The climb is gradual and rarely troubles children who get carsick, but carry a bag just in case. Stop at the Umiam Lake viewpoint, about 15 km short of Shillong, where the reservoir spreads below pine ridges. Check in around 3 to 4 pm. In the evening, walk around Ward's Lake and Police Bazar; most shops close by 8.30 pm, so eat early. If you land late, we go straight to the hotel and move Umiam to the return drive.

Day 2Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls and on to Sohra
  • Sohra
  • 1,480 m
  • 70 km · 3 hrs with stops
  • Breakfast, Dinner

Check out after breakfast and reach Shillong Peak soon after it opens; carry original ID for every adult, as it sits in an Air Force area. Elephant Falls is 3 km away and takes about 45 minutes. Then take the Sohra road, 55 km of winding hill road. Stop at the Mawkdok Dympep viewpoint, where a zipline runs across the valley on clear days, and at Wah Kaba Falls. Reach Sohra by 3 pm and check in. If the sky is clear, catch sunset at the Thangkharang Park viewpoint over the plains of Bangladesh. Sohra is quiet after dark, so dinner is at the resort.

Day 3Nohkalikai, Mawsmai Cave and back to Shillong
  • Shillong
  • 1,525 m
  • Local sightseeing, then 55 km · 1.5–2 hrs
  • Breakfast, Dinner

Be at the Nohkalikai viewpoint by 8 am, before cloud rises out of the gorge. The 340 m fall is fullest from June to October; in March and April it thins to a ribbon above a turquoise pool. Next, Mawsmai Cave: the lit route is about 150 m with one tight squeeze, and there is an exit path for anyone who wants to skip it. From the Mawsmai road, look across to the Seven Sisters Falls, which flow mainly in the rains. After lunch, walk the 1 km path to Arwah Cave, then drive back to Shillong by around 5 pm for your last evening in town.

Day 4Shillong to Guwahati
  • Departure
  • 55 m
  • 100 km · 3–3.5 hrs
  • Breakfast

Take a slow breakfast and leave Shillong by 9.30 am. If you missed Umiam Lake on Day 1, we stop at the Water Sports Complex for a short boat ride. The descent to Jorabat is straightforward, but traffic on the Guwahati bypass builds up after 2 pm, so book flights after 2.30 pm or trains after 3 pm. If you have a late evening departure, we can add the Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill, though the queue for the inner sanctum can take two to four hours on busy days. Your driver drops you at the terminal or station.

Shillong and Cherrapunji: questions

01Why stay a night in Cherrapunji instead of a day trip?

Cloud usually rises out of the Sohra gorges by late morning. On a day trip from Shillong you reach Nohkalikai around midday, when the view is most often lost. Sleeping one night in Sohra puts you at the viewpoint by 8 am, and gives you a quiet evening on the plateau away from Shillong traffic.

02How far is Cherrapunji from Shillong?

Sohra is about 55 km from Shillong, a 1.5 to 2 hour drive on a winding but well-surfaced hill road. With stops at the Mawkdok valley viewpoint and Wah Kaba Falls, plan on three hours. The road is usually open all year, though heavy rain can cause short delays.

03What is the price of this Shillong and Cherrapunji package?

It starts at ₹12,500 per person on twin sharing with standard hotels, breakfast and dinner, and a private sedan. Premium hotels add around ₹3,500 to ₹5,000 per person and luxury more. An Innova or Ertiga for four or more travellers costs extra but is shared across the group.

04When is the best time to visit Cherrapunji?

October and November combine full waterfalls with clearer skies. June to September gives the biggest falls but frequent cloud and heavy rain. December to February is dry and clear but the falls are thin. March to May is warm, with occasional storms. We run this trip in all months.

05Is Mawsmai Cave safe for children and seniors?

Mawsmai is lit and has a marked route of about 150 m. Children usually love it. There is one tight squeeze and some wet, slippery rock, so seniors with knee or back trouble can take the shorter exit or wait outside. Wear shoes with grip, not sandals.

06Does this trip include the double decker root bridge?

No. The Nongriat double decker root bridge involves about 3,500 steps down from Tyrna and the same climb back, a full day of effort. It does not fit a gentle family trip of three nights. Our Living Root Bridges Trek or Complete Meghalaya packages include it with time to rest.

07Do we need a guide at the Sohra sights?

Not for the viewpoints and caves in this itinerary. Since mid-2025, East Khasi Hills has required registered local guides for treks such as Nongriat and Wei Sawdong. If you add a trek, we arrange the guide. Check current status before you travel, as the rules are still being refined.

08What is the weather like in Sohra?

Sohra sits at about 1,480 m and is cooler and wetter than Shillong. It receives over 11,000 mm of rain a year, most between May and September. Winter days are mild and clear, but nights fall to 5 to 8°C. Pack a rain jacket in any season and a warm layer from November.

09Can we reach Guwahati Airport for a morning flight on Day 4?

A flight before about 12.30 pm is risky, because the drive is 3 to 3.5 hours and traffic near Guwahati can add time. We suggest flights after 2.30 pm. If you must leave early, we can move the last night to Guwahati and do the drive on Day 3 evening.
