Quick answer

Tawang is a Monpa town in western Arunachal Pradesh, 450 to 555 km from Guwahati by road over two driving days via Bomdila, Dirang and the Sela Tunnel. Indians need an Arunachal ILP; Bum La needs an extra permit issued in Tawang. Go March to May or October to November; December to February brings snow. Plan at least six nights.

Key takeaways

  • Tawang is two driving days from Guwahati each way, so six nights is the practical minimum and seven is comfortable
  • Indian visitors need an Arunachal ILP; foreigners need a Protected Area Permit through an approved operator
  • Bum La, 37 km from Tawang at about 4,600 m, is for Indian civilians only, with a DC permit and an Army stamp
  • The Sela Tunnel, open since March 2024, keeps the road to Tawang open in winter; the old Sela Pass road is a fair-weather stop
  • March to May and October to November give the clearest roads; December to February brings snow and road closures
  • Sleep a night at Dirang or Bomdila on the way up to help your body adjust to the altitude

The first time most people see Tawang, they have been in a car for two days and crossed a 13,000 ft tunnel to get there. That journey is the trip. Guwahati to Tawang is not a transfer you sleep through; it climbs from the tea gardens of the Brahmaputra plain through three climate zones to a monastery town on a ridge facing the eastern Himalaya.

We run Tawang trips from March to May and October to December, plus snow departures in January and February. This guide covers the route, the permits, the months, the sights and the mistakes that cost people a day.

The road from Guwahati

Everyone reaches Tawang on the same road: NH13, which leaves the Assam plains at Bhalukpong and climbs through West Kameng district. From Guwahati, the drive is about 450 to 555 km depending on where you start and which variant you take, and we split it over two days each way.

Stretch Approx. distance Approx. time Notes
Guwahati to Tezpur 180 km 4 hrs Plains, good highway
Tezpur to Bhalukpong 60 km 1.5 hrs ILP check gate at the state border
Bhalukpong to Bomdila 100 km 4 to 5 hrs Steep climb, landslide-prone in the monsoon
Bomdila to Dirang 40 km 1.5 hrs Down into the Dirang valley
Dirang to Tawang About 140 km 5 to 6 hrs Sela Tunnel or Sela Pass, then Jang

Times assume normal conditions and a start after breakfast. Landslides from June to September and snow from December to February add hours. Bomdila to Tawang is about 171 km in total.

The standard plan is Guwahati or Tezpur to Dirang (or Bomdila) on day one and Dirang to Tawang on day two. The night at mid-height, around 1,500 m at Dirang or about 2,400 m at Bomdila, helps your body adjust before Tawang and Sela. Our Guwahati to Tawang road guide has the stop-by-stop detail.

The Sela Tunnel and Sela Pass

The Sela Tunnel, opened in March 2024, runs at about 13,000 ft under the ridge below Sela Pass. It saves roughly 10 km and an hour between Dirang and Tawang, and, more importantly, keeps the road open in winter when snow used to close the pass for days.

The old road over Sela Pass, at about 4,200 m, is still open in fair weather. It passes the frozen or half-frozen Sela Lake and the painted gate at the top. We take it on the way up when the sky is clear and the tunnel on the way down, or when snow closes the top. Our Sela Pass and Sela Tunnel guide covers both.

Beyond Sela, the road passes the Jaswant Garh war memorial and drops to Jang, where Nuranang Falls pours about 100 m off a cliff a short detour from the highway. Tawang is about an hour further.

Flights and helicopters

Tezpur has the nearest airport with regular commercial flights, about 320 km from Tawang. Guwahati has far more flights. A government-backed helicopter service between Guwahati and Tawang has run in past years, but we could not confirm a current schedule. Treat it as subject to operation and check current status before you travel; we do not build itineraries around it.

Permits for Tawang

Tawang is in Arunachal Pradesh, which is an inner line state. You need a permit before you reach the Bhalukpong gate.

  • Indian citizens need an Arunachal Pradesh Inner Line Permit, applied online on the state eILP portal. Expect about INR 300 to 500 per person; pay whatever the portal shows. Carry a printout and the original ID you used.
  • Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit, applied through an approved Indian tour operator, normally for groups of two or more. Solo foreign travellers have been allowed to Tawang, Bomdila and Ziro in some cases.
  • Bum La and Madhuri Lake need an extra permit issued in Tawang, for Indian civilians only.

Our Arunachal ILP guide walks through the application step by step. Permit rules in border districts change, so check current status before you travel.

Best time to visit Tawang

Months Weather Roads Our view
March to May Mild days, cold nights, rhododendrons on the passes Mostly open; late snow on Sela in March Very good
June to September Rain, cloud, green valleys Landslides common below Bomdila Only with buffer days
October to November Clear skies, crisp air, best mountain views Open Best
December to February Snow, freezing nights Tunnel open; Sela top and Bum La often closed Good for snow, plan flexibly

Tawang's climate data is modelled rather than measured, but expect winter nights well below freezing, and daytime highs in the low teens from May to October. The old monastery halls are unheated, so pack warm layers in every month.

For snow, our Winter Tawang and Sela Snow trip, from INR 28,000 per person, runs from late December to February, with buffer time for closed roads.

What to see in and around Tawang

Tawang Monastery

Tawang Monastery, founded around 1680 to 1681 by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso, is the largest Buddhist monastery in India and the reason the town exists. The main assembly hall holds a tall gilded Buddha statue, and the complex includes a library, a museum and monks' quarters on a ridge above the valley. Go for the morning prayers, dress modestly and ask before photographing monks. A small museum fee is charged.

Bum La Pass

Bum La sits at about 4,600 m on the India-China border, 37 km from Tawang on a rough mountain road. It is open to Indian civilians only, with a permit from the Deputy Commissioner's office in Tawang that is then stamped at the Army cantonment. You apply the day before through your hotel, driver or operator. Only SUVs go up, and only in clear weather; closures after snow are common from December to March. At the top, soldiers usually give visitors a short talk about the pass and its history; the visit is brief, photography is restricted near installations, and it is bitterly cold even in May. Start by 7 am and carry warm layers, water and snacks. Our Bum La permit guide covers the process.

Madhuri Lake and the PT Tso lakes

Madhuri Lake, locally Sangetsar Tso, lies about 7 km past the Bum La turn-off and needs the same Tawang-issued permit. It is usually combined with Bum La in one long day, along with a stop at PT Tso and other high-altitude lakes on the way.

In and near town

  • Tawang War Memorial, a stupa-shaped memorial to soldiers of the 1962 war, with a small museum and evening light-and-sound show when it runs
  • Giant Buddha statue on the hill above town
  • Urgelling Monastery, associated with the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama
  • Nuranang Falls near Jang, on the way in or out
  • The market, for Monpa woollens, prayer flags and momos

Monpa food and local customs

Tawang's food is closer to Tibet and Bhutan than to Assam. Look for:

  • Thukpa, a noodle soup, and momos, steamed dumplings, in every small eatery
  • Zan, a thick millet or maize dough eaten with curries in Monpa homes
  • Butter tea, salty and rich, offered in monasteries and homestays
  • Churpi, hard dried yak or cow cheese, sold in the market
  • Local spirits made from millet or rice, offered at festivals

A few customs worth knowing: walk clockwise around stupas, prayer wheels and monasteries; remove shoes and hats inside prayer halls; do not point your feet at altars or monks; and ask before photographing people, especially at festivals. Many Monpa families speak Hindi, and English is common among younger people and hotel staff.

Driving tips for the Tawang road

Almost every guest travels with a local driver in an SUV, and we recommend it. The road is well built in long stretches but changes quickly with weather.

  • Start early. Aim to be moving by 7 am on both driving days; fog and cloud build on the passes after noon.
  • Expect Army convoys. Military traffic has priority on NH13. Drivers pull over and wait.
  • Carry snacks and water. Eateries exist at Bhalukpong, Tenga, Bomdila, Dirang, Sela and Jang, but long stretches in between have none.
  • Keep warm clothes in the car, not in the boot. Sela can be below freezing even in April.
  • Refuel in Bomdila or Dirang if you are self-driving your own car; pumps are few above Dirang.
  • Allow for landslide stops from June to September, especially between Bhalukpong and Bomdila.

For a full budget including car, hotels and permits, see our Tawang trip cost guide.

Festivals

Festival Usual timing Notes
Torgya January, 3 days Masked dances at Tawang Monastery; dates follow the lunar calendar
Losar February (18 February in 2026) Tibetan new year, celebrated across Tawang, Dirang and Bomdila
Tawang Festival Autumn in some years Cultural festival; dates are announced locally

Lunar festival dates shift each year. Check current dates before you travel.

Altitude, health and comfort

Tawang is high enough to affect people who come straight from sea level, and Sela and Bum La are higher still. Most healthy travellers are fine if they follow a few rules:

  • Sleep at Dirang or Bomdila on the way up. Do not drive Guwahati to Tawang in one push.
  • Drink three to four litres of water a day and go easy on alcohol for the first two nights.
  • Save Bum La for your second or third day in Tawang, not the day you arrive.
  • Watch for warning signs: a headache that does not go with rest, breathlessness at rest, confusion or vomiting. Descend and get help.
  • Carry your regular medicines, and talk to a doctor first if you have heart or lung conditions.

Phone networks are patchy on the road and reasonable in town. ATMs exist in Tawang, Dirang and Bomdila, but carry enough cash for fees and small eateries.

Where to stay

Tawang has a range of hotels and homestays in and around the main market and along the road to the monastery. Rooms with heaters or electric blankets make a big difference from November to March; ask before booking. Our hotels in Tawang guide lists options by budget. At Dirang, riverside stays and homestays near the hot springs are the usual choice.

How we'd plan it

We build every Tawang trip around two driving days each way and one flexible day.

  1. Day 1: Guwahati or Tezpur to Dirang. Cross the Bhalukpong gate before noon; reach Dirang by evening.
  2. Day 2: Dirang to Tawang via Sela. Take the old pass road if the sky is clear; stop at Jaswant Garh and Nuranang Falls.
  3. Day 3: Tawang town. Monastery at prayer time, the war memorial, the market. Your hotel files the Bum La permit.
  4. Day 4: Bum La and Madhuri Lake. A full day, weather allowing.
  5. Day 5: Buffer. Use it if Bum La was closed, or for Urgelling and a slow afternoon.
  6. Days 6 and 7: Back down via Dirang or Bomdila to Tezpur or Guwahati.

That is the shape of our seven-night Tawang trip with Bum La and Madhuri Lake, from INR 34,000 per person, which adds a first night in Tezpur and keeps a spare day for a second Bum La attempt. With one night less and Bum La as an option, it becomes the six-night Tawang via Dirang and Sela, from INR 29,000 per person. For more time around Bomdila and Dirang, choose the eight-night Western Arunachal circuit, from INR 37,000 per person; to add rhinos first, the Kaziranga and Tawang tour. Couples often prefer the slower seven-night Arunachal Honeymoon, from INR 41,500 per person. For day-by-day variants, see our Tawang itinerary guide.

Good to know

Questions people ask

01How many days are enough for Tawang?

Plan at least six nights from Guwahati, and seven if you want Bum La and Madhuri Lake without rushing. The road takes two days each way, usually with a night at Dirang or Bomdila, which leaves two or three nights in Tawang. Add a buffer day in winter or the monsoon, when snow or landslides can hold you up.

02How do I reach Tawang from Guwahati?

By road, via Tezpur, the Bhalukpong check gate, Bomdila, Dirang, the Sela Tunnel and Jang. The distance is about 450 to 555 km depending on your start point, over two driving days with a night at Dirang or Bomdila. Tezpur has the nearest airport with regular flights, about 320 km away. Shared Sumos also run from Tezpur.

03Do I need a permit to visit Tawang?

Yes. Indian citizens need an Arunachal Pradesh Inner Line Permit, applied online on the state eILP portal before the trip. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit, arranged through an approved Indian tour operator for groups of two or more. Bum La and Madhuri Lake need an extra permit issued in Tawang. Check current status before you travel.

04What is the best time to visit Tawang?

March to May and October to November are the best months, with mostly clear roads and mild days of about 10 to 15°C in Tawang. December to February brings snow and freezing nights, which some travellers want, but Bum La and the old Sela Pass road often close. June to September brings landslides on the way up.

05Does it snow in Tawang?

Yes. Tawang usually gets snow between December and February, and Sela Pass and Bum La can be snowbound from December into March. Snow falls on the higher passes more reliably than in Tawang town itself. For a snow trip, go in late December to February and accept that some roads may close for a day or two.

06Is the Sela Tunnel open to tourists?

Yes. The Sela Tunnel on NH13 opened in March 2024 and is used by all traffic between Dirang and Tawang. It runs at about 13,000 ft, below Sela Pass, and saves roughly 10 km and an hour. In clear weather, drivers can still take the old road over Sela Pass to see the lake and the gate. Check current status before you travel.

07Can foreigners go to Bum La Pass?

No. Bum La on the India-China border is open only to Indian civilians, with a permit from the Deputy Commissioner's office in Tawang stamped by the Army. Foreign nationals with a Protected Area Permit can visit Tawang town, the monastery and several nearby sights, but not Bum La. Rules can change, so check current status before you travel.

08Is Tawang safe for altitude sickness?

Tawang town is lower than Sela Pass and Bum La, and most healthy travellers are fine if they go up gradually. Spend a night at Dirang or Bomdila on the way, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol on the first night and do not rush Bum La on your first day. People with heart or lung conditions should check with a doctor first.

09Is there a helicopter from Guwahati to Tawang?

A government-backed helicopter service between Guwahati and Tawang has operated in past years, but we could not confirm a current schedule, and it should not be the backbone of a plan. Seats are few, baggage is limited and weather cancels flights. Treat it as subject to operation and check current status before you travel.
