More Northeast: questions travellers ask

01Do I need an Inner Line Permit for Kohima?

Yes. Indian citizens who are not residents of Nagaland need an Inner Line Permit, including for Dimapur. Apply online at ilp.nagaland.gov.in; the tourist ILP is INR 200 for 30 days. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit plus the ILP, and must register within 24 hours. Check current status before you travel.

02How long is the Dzukou Valley trek?

From the Viswema road head, the walk to the valley rim is about 8 km one way and takes 3 to 4 hours for most people, starting with a steep 1.5 hour climb. The Jakhama route is shorter but steeper, also 3 to 4 hours of hard walking. Round trips are possible in a day, but staying a night is better.

03Why is Khonoma called India's first green village?

In 1998, after hunters killed a large number of Blyth's tragopans in a single week, the village council banned hunting and set up the Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary across about 20 sq km of forest. The village also limited logging. In 2005 Khonoma was recognised as India's first green village.

04Is it safe to visit Imphal now?

Manipur has seen ethnic violence since May 2023, with curfews, blockades and internet shutdowns at times, and several foreign governments advise against all but essential travel. President's Rule ended in February 2026, but tensions remain in parts of the state. Conditions change quickly. Check current advisories before planning; we confirm conditions before booking.

05What are phumdis in Loktak Lake?

Phumdis are floating masses of vegetation, soil and organic matter that drift on Loktak Lake. Some are thick enough to support huts. Fishing families also build circular phumdis called athaphums to trap fish. The largest phumdi, at the southern end of the lake, forms Keibul Lamjao National Park.

06Do I need a permit to visit Aizawl?

Yes. Indian citizens from outside Mizoram need an Inner Line Permit. Apply online at ilp.mizoram.gov.in or get a temporary pass at the Lengpui Airport counter; it is valid for 15 days and renewable once, for a fee of about INR 120. Foreigners need a Protected Area Permit in advance. Check current status before you travel.

07Do I need a permit to visit Agartala?

No. Tripura does not require an Inner Line Permit for Indian citizens, and it is not a Protected Area Permit state for foreigners. Indians need only photo ID for hotel check-in, and foreigners need a valid passport and visa; hotels file the usual Form C registration. Check current status before you travel.

08What is Unakoti famous for?

Unakoti is famous for its giant rock-cut carvings of Shiva, Ganesha, Durga and other deities in a forested gorge in north Tripura. The central Unakotiswara Kal Bhairava, a Shiva head about 30 feet tall, is the best known. The carvings date to roughly the 7th to 9th centuries CE and are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.

09When is the Hornbill Festival held?

The Hornbill Festival is held every year from 1 to 10 December at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, about 12 km south of Kohima. The festival opens on Nagaland's Statehood Day, 1 December; the 2026 edition runs 1 to 10 December. Each day has tribal dances, games, crafts and food stalls, with evening concerts and night markets in Kohima.
