Pick on heating first, view second. Book 4–8 weeks ahead for October–November and March–May.
Key takeaways
- Tawang town sits at about 2,670 m, with parts higher, so a working room heater or electric blanket matters more than star labels from October to March.
- Stay in the Old Market area if you want to walk to cafes and shops; stay on the monastery side if you want quiet mornings and an early monastery visit.
- The Vivanta Arunachal Pradesh, Tawang is the only large international-brand hotel in town, with 80 rooms and an indoor heated pool.
- Guesthouses such as Dolma Khangsar on Gompa AIR Road put you under a kilometre from Tawang Monastery at a budget price.
- Most hotels help arrange the Bum La taxi and permit through local operators, but the permit is issued by the district administration and can be suspended in snow.
- Plan two to three nights in Tawang; a fourth night gives a buffer for weather at Sela or a cancelled Bum La day.

Tawang has more than 50 registered hotels, and the right one comes down to three things: whether the heater works at 9 pm in December, whether you can walk to dinner, and whether the window faces the valley or the building next door. We have booked Tawang rooms for guests across every season, and those three questions sort out almost everything.
This page covers where the hotels are, which ones we are comfortable sending guests to, what they roughly cost, and how to match a stay to your trip. We name only properties we have confirmed are operating. We do not use star ratings, because in Tawang a well-run family hotel often beats a place with a bigger sign.
How the town is laid out
Tawang town spreads along a ridge at about 2,670 m and higher, with Tawang Monastery on the higher western spur. Think of it in three zones.
- Old Market and Nehru Market. The commercial centre. Restaurants, ATMs, taxi stands, pharmacies and most mid-range hotels. Noisy in the evening, convenient all day.
- Monastery side (Gompa Road, AIR Colony). Uphill towards the monastery. Smaller guesthouses, quieter nights, easy early-morning walks to prayers.
- Valley edge (Lemberdung, Famla, Temilo). Newer, larger properties with open views. You will need the car to go anywhere.
The town is small enough that no zone is more than a short drive from another. The real difference is whether you can step out on foot after dark, and in winter most people do not.

A few notes from our side:
- Vivanta Arunachal Pradesh, Tawang opened in December 2023. IHCL describes it as 80 rooms and suites on about ten acres, with an indoor temperature-controlled pool, a spa, a gym and a children's play area. It is the only large branded hotel in town and the easiest recommendation for a honeymoon or a family that wants everything on site.
- Timilo Boutique is small, which helps in winter: rooms warm up faster and staff know every guest. Recent listings mention heated beds; confirm this for your room when you book.
- Hotel Tawang Heights is the one we suggest most often for first-time visitors. It is close to the Old Market and used to arranging the Bum La day.
- Dolma Khangsar and Dolma Guest House are simple and friendly. Pick them if you care more about being near the monastery than about room size.
Budget bands and what you get
| Band | Indicative rate per night (2026) | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | Rs 1,500 – 3,000 | Clean rooms, geyser, blanket; heater sometimes on request or extra |
| Mid-range | Rs 3,000 – 7,000 | Room heater or electric blanket, in-house restaurant, parking |
| Upper mid / boutique | Rs 7,000 – 12,000 | Better insulation, heated bedding, views, fewer rooms |
| Luxury | Rs 15,000 and above | Central heating, pool, spa, multiple restaurants |
These are indicative ranges, not quotes. Rates move with the season, and several hotels quote with breakfast or breakfast plus dinner. In winter, the dinner plan is worth taking: Tawang restaurants close early and the walk back is cold.
Heating, power and hot water
This is where Tawang stays go right or wrong. December night lows sit around minus 3 to minus 5 °C in town (approximate), and even October nights dip close to freezing.
What we check before booking:
- Heater type. Oil-filled radiators and electric blankets are the norm. Ask whether there is a charge.
- Backup power. Power cuts are common in bad weather. Ask whether the generator runs the heaters or only the lights.
- Hot water hours. Some properties run geysers on a timer. Know the window so you are not stuck with a cold shower at 6 am before Bum La.
- Room position. Upper floors on the sunny side stay warmer. Ground-floor rooms facing the hill stay cold all day.
If the hotel cannot confirm heating in writing for a winter booking, we move on.
Which area suits your trip
Monastery-first trips. Stay on Gompa Road or in AIR Colony. You can walk to the morning prayers, which usually start early, and return before the tour groups arrive. The walk back up is short but steep at this altitude; take it slowly on day one.
Bum La and Madhuri Lake days. Any area works because the taxi picks you up at the door. What matters is that the hotel will serve breakfast early. The Bum La vehicles leave early in the morning, and the trip to Bum La Pass, about 37 km each way, with a stop at Madhuri Lake fills most of the day. Read our Bum La permit guide before you commit to a date.
Families and seniors. The Old Market area, on a lower floor, in a hotel with an in-house restaurant. Less walking at altitude, and dinner is downstairs.
Honeymoon. The Vivanta or Timilo, with a valley-facing room. If budget matters, a mid-range hotel with a view and dinner in the room works well too. Our Arunachal honeymoon package builds in two nights in Tawang for this reason.
Season by season
| Season | Months | Tawang weather (approximate) | Hotel picture |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | March – May | Cool days, cold nights, occasional snow at Sela into April | Busy; book 4–8 weeks ahead |
| Monsoon | June – September | Wet, cloudy, landslide delays on the road | Quiet; discounts common |
| Autumn | October – November | Clear skies, cold nights | Peak; the best rooms go first |
| Winter | December – February | Below freezing at night, snow at Sela and often at Bum La | Mixed; heating quality decides everything |
Autumn is the most reliable season for views from the room. Winter is when a cheap room turns into a poor trip. Our winter Tawang package only uses hotels we have checked for heating.
Getting there and the nights before Tawang
No one arrives in Tawang fresh. From Guwahati the road runs through Bhalukpong, Bomdila or Dirang, and over Sela Pass at about 4,170 m. The Sela Tunnel, opened in 2024, has taken the worst of the winter closures off the route, but it is still a two-day drive. Our Guwahati to Tawang road guide has the distances.
That means your Tawang hotel booking sits inside a chain: a night in Dirang or Bomdila going up, two or three in Tawang, and one in Dirang coming down. Arriving late at a Tawang hotel after a long Sela day is normal, so we always tell the hotel the expected arrival time and ask them to keep the kitchen open.
You also need a permit to enter Arunachal. Indian citizens need an ILP; foreign nationals need a PAP. Hotels will ask to see it at check-in. See our Arunachal ILP guide for the current process.
Homestays around Tawang
The Tawang district directory lists more than 20 homestays in villages just outside town, including Lebrang, Shyo, Mandrelling and Urgelling. They are a good choice if you want Monpa home food, butter tea in the kitchen and a slower day.
Before booking a homestay, confirm:
- a heater or heavy bedding in winter
- whether the bathroom is attached
- parking and whether the approach road is paved
- how far the nearest restaurant is if you want to eat out
Homestays are often the cheapest way to stay three nights, and they give you a buffer day without paying hotel rates.
Eating in and eating out
Tawang's restaurants cluster in the Old Market and Nehru Market. Expect thukpa, momos, butter tea and Monpa dishes alongside north Indian and Chinese-style menus. In October and April you can walk out for dinner comfortably. From December to February most kitchens wind down by 8 or 8:30 pm, and the cold makes the walk back unpleasant.
That is why we usually book mid-range hotels in Tawang on a breakfast-and-dinner plan in winter. It costs a little more than room-only, but you eat hot food at a sensible hour and do not need the car after dark.
Two more practical points. Vegetarian food is easy to find, but pure-vegetarian kitchens are fewer, so mention it when you book. And if you are travelling with small children or seniors, ask the hotel to keep a thermos of hot water in the room; at this altitude people dehydrate faster than they expect.
Mistakes we see most often
- Booking Tawang for one night. You arrive tired after Sela and leave before seeing anything. Two nights is the floor.
- Choosing on photos alone. Pictures are taken on clear October days. Ask about the heater, not the view.
- Assuming Bum La is guaranteed. Book the hotel around a spare day, not around a single Bum La date.
Booking tips that save money and trouble
- Book the Dirang or Bomdila night at the same time. If Sela is snowed in and you are held back a day, a flexible hotel on the lower side saves the plan.
- Ask for a free-cancellation window of at least 72 hours in winter, when road status changes overnight.
- Pay the advance by bank transfer or UPI to the hotel's registered account only. Never to a personal number that messaged you first.
- Avoid peak Saturday check-ins in October and November if you can. Weekday rates are often lower and service is calmer.
- Carry some cash. Card machines exist, but network outages are frequent at this altitude.

How we'd plan it
For a first trip in October or April, this is the stay pattern we use most:
- Night 1, Guwahati or Bhalukpong. Break the drive; keep it simple.
- Night 2, Dirang. Around 1,500 m. A gentle altitude step.
- Nights 3–5, Tawang. Old Market hotel for convenience, or the Vivanta for comfort. Day one for the monastery and town, day two for Bum La and Madhuri Lake, day three as a weather buffer or for the Jang side.
- Night 6, Dirang or Bomdila. On the way down.
- Night 7, Guwahati or Tezpur. Ready for the flight.
That pattern matches our Tawang via Dirang and Sela package and, with the Bum La day protected, our Tawang with Bum La and Madhuri Lake package. If you want a day-by-day version with timings, our Tawang itinerary guide sets it out, and the Tawang place guide covers what to see.
Rules on Bum La access, permits and road status change during the year, so check current status before you travel.
Tell us your dates and budget on the contact page and we will shortlist three Tawang hotels with heating confirmed.
