Trideep Dutta Photography · Commons · CC BY-SA 4.0The Tawang itinerary we recommend is 7 days from Guwahati: 2 nights in Dirang to acclimatise, then over Sela to Tawang for 3 nights covering the monastery, Bum La and Madhuri Lake, and back via Nuranang Falls and Bomdila. The drive takes 2 days each way, so 6 days is tight and 5 the bare minimum.
Key takeaways
- Guwahati to Tawang is about 470 km and takes 2 days each way; there is no sensible one-day drive
- Sleep at Dirang (about 1,600 m) or Bomdila (about 2,400 m) before Tawang (about 2,700 m); two Dirang nights make acclimatisation easier
- The Sela Tunnel, opened in March 2024, saves about an hour and keeps the road open below the 4,170 m pass in most winter weather
- Indians need an Arunachal Temporary ILP (about ₹300 to ₹500 online); foreigners need a Protected Area Permit and cannot visit Bum La
- Bum La needs a permit from the Tawang DC office, stamped at the Army cantonment, arranged the day before
- Plan Bum La for your second full day in Tawang, after two nights at altitude

Tawang is the one trip in the Northeast where the itinerary is decided by the road rather than the sights. It is about 470 km from Guwahati, all of the second half on mountain highway, and it climbs from roughly 55 m on the Brahmaputra plain to about 2,700 m in Tawang town, with a 4,170 m pass on the way. Plan it right and the altitude is a non-issue. Plan it as a rush, and you arrive at Bum La with a headache and see nothing.
Below are the 7-day plan we recommend, a 6-day version without the Dirang rest day and a 5-day minimum, with drive times, where you sleep and at what altitude.
Permits before you leave
Sort these out before day 1:
- Indian citizens: apply online for the Arunachal Pradesh ILP. Under guidelines notified in March 2026, tourists get a Temporary ILP valid for 15 days across the state, approved after Aadhaar OTP authentication. Expect about ₹300 to ₹500 per person and pay whatever the portal shows. It is checked, with your original ID, at Bhalukpong, the Assam–Arunachal gate.
- Foreign nationals: a Protected Area Permit, arranged through a registered tour operator. Foreigners cannot visit Bum La.
- Bum La: a separate permit from the Tawang DC office, stamped at the Army cantonment in Tawang, arranged the day before. Your hotel or local driver usually handles it.
Our Arunachal ILP and PAP guide has the step-by-step, and the Bum La permit guide covers the pass itself. Rules change, so check current status before you travel.

| 7 | Bomdila to Guwahati | About 290 km | 8 to 9 hrs | Home |
This is six nights, the length of our Tawang via Dirang and Sela package.
Day 1: Guwahati to Dirang
Leave Guwahati by 6 am. The first 180 km to Tezpur are flat and fast, about 4 hours. From Tezpur it is roughly 60 km to Bhalukpong, where you show your ILP and original ID at the Arunachal gate. Then the road climbs through Tenga and over the Bomdila ridge before dropping to Dirang.
Stop for lunch around Bhalukpong or Tenga. You should reach Dirang between 4 and 5 pm. Night 1 at about 1,600 m is the easiest start for acclimatisation, and Dirang's river valley is warmer than Bomdila.
- Drive: about 330 km, 10 to 11 hrs
- Sleep: Dirang, about 1,600 m
Day 2: A rest day in Dirang
This is the day that makes the rest of the trip easy. After 10 hours in the car, you sleep a second night at 1,600 m instead of pushing to Tawang tired. Spend the morning in the Sangti valley, about 10 km away, where black-necked cranes winter from about November to February, and the afternoon at the hot springs and in Dirang Dzong, the old village of stone houses.
- Drive: about 40 km of local hops
- Sleep: Dirang
Day 3: Dirang to Tawang over Sela
Leave by 8 am. The road climbs steadily to the Sela Tunnel, which runs beneath the pass. Opened in March 2024, it cuts about an hour off the drive and keeps the route open in most winter weather.
In clear weather, we still take the old road over Sela Pass at 4,170 m for 20 minutes at the gate and the frozen or half-frozen Sela Lake beside it. Don't stay longer at that height on arrival day. Then down past the Jaswant Garh war memorial, where the Army often serves visitors tea, and on to Tawang by early afternoon. Rest. No walking uphill today.
- Drive: about 135 km, 4.5 to 5.5 hrs
- Sleep: Tawang, about 2,700 m
Day 4: Tawang town and the monastery
A short day at altitude. Start at Tawang Monastery, founded in 1680–81 and the largest monastery in India, for the 8 am prayers if you can. Then Urgelling Gompa, the birthplace of the Sixth Dalai Lama, the Tawang War Memorial with its evening sound and light show, and the craft centre for carpets and wooden masks.
Today your hotel or driver submits your Bum La application at the DC office with copies of your ILP and ID, then takes it to the Army cantonment for the stamp. Government offices keep working hours, so make sure this day is not a Sunday or public holiday.
- Drive: about 30 km of local hops
- Sleep: Tawang
Day 5: Bum La and Madhuri Lake
Leave at 7 am in a local Tawang-registered SUV; outside taxis generally don't run to Bum La, and only SUVs go up, in clear weather. The road climbs about 37 km, 2 to 2.5 hours, past PT Tso lake to the pass at about 4,600 m (15,200 ft) on the India–China border. The Army decides day by day who goes up and for how long.
On the way down, take the fork to Madhuri Lake, officially Sangetsar Tso, about 7 km past the turn-off and covered by the same permit. It was formed by an earthquake in 1950 and later used as a Bollywood film location. Back in Tawang by 3 pm. Check current status before you travel, as Bum La closes after snowfall and for security reasons.
- Drive: about 90 km round trip, 5 to 6 hrs in the car
- Sleep: Tawang
Day 6: Tawang to Bomdila via Nuranang Falls
Leave at 8 am. About 40 km out, stop at Nuranang (Jang) Falls, a roughly 100 m drop a short walk from the road. Recross the Sela Tunnel, pass Dirang, and climb to Bomdila for the evening. Visit the Bomdila monastery if you arrive before dusk.
- Drive: about 175 km, 6 to 7 hrs
- Sleep: Bomdila, about 2,400 m
Day 7: Bomdila to Guwahati
Leave by 7 am. About 290 km and 8 to 9 hours via Bhalukpong and Tezpur. Book flights from Guwahati for the next day, not the same evening.
- Drive: about 290 km, 8 to 9 hrs
The 6-day version
Drop the Dirang rest day. You drive Guwahati to Dirang on day 1 and cross Sela to Tawang on day 2, then follow days 4 to 7 above. It works for fit travellers who have been at altitude before, but you reach Tawang with less recovery, so keep that afternoon completely free.
The 5-day version
| Day | Route | Sleep |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Guwahati to Dirang | Dirang, about 1,600 m |
| 2 | Dirang to Tawang via Sela | Tawang, about 2,700 m |
| 3 | Bum La and Madhuri Lake, or the monastery and town | Tawang |
| 4 | Tawang to Bomdila via Nuranang Falls | Bomdila, about 2,400 m |
| 5 | Bomdila to Guwahati | Home |
The catch is day 3. Bum La the morning after arriving in Tawang is a big jump in altitude; if you choose it, keep day 2 very easy. And the permit must be filed and stamped on arrival day, which fails if that day is a Sunday or holiday. Most people who try the 5-day version end up choosing the monastery over Bum La.
With 8 days or more
Add a night in Tezpur at the start, which shortens the first mountain day, or a spare day in Tawang in case Bum La is shut on your chosen morning. Our Tawang with Bum La and Madhuri Lake package runs 7 nights this way, starting from Tezpur, and our Western Arunachal Complete route adds more time at every stop over 8 nights.
Pairing Tawang with Kaziranga
Tezpur, on the way to Bhalukpong, is only a couple of hours from Kaziranga's Kohora gate, so the two combine neatly. Spend two nights in Kaziranga first for the safaris between November and April, then drive to Dirang via Tezpur and Bhalukpong. That first mountain day becomes shorter than the full Guwahati–Dirang run. On the way back, drive straight from Bomdila to Guwahati as in the main plan. Allow 9 nights in all. Kaziranga sits at under 100 m, so it adds nothing to the altitude load, and the plains days make a good rest either side of the mountains.
Variations
Snow version (December to February)
Snow on Sela and around Tawang is the draw, and the tunnel means you'll usually get through. Bum La is the uncertainty: after a heavy fall it can stay closed for days, so keep a spare day in Tawang. Temperatures in Tawang drop well below freezing at night; confirm your hotel has room heaters and hot water. Our Winter Tawang and Sela Snow package builds in the buffer.
Monsoon version (June to September)
We don't recommend Tawang in peak monsoon. Landslides between Bhalukpong and Bomdila can hold traffic for hours, and cloud hides Sela and Bum La. If you must go, add a buffer day at each end and avoid a flight on the evening of the last day.
Family and seniors version
For children or older parents, keep the 7-day plan with two nights at Dirang, skip the Sela Pass detour and consider Bum La carefully, since 4,600 m is a real altitude. Our Slow Dirang and Bomdila trip suits guests who want the mountains without Tawang's height.
Foreigners version
Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit from a registered operator and cannot visit Bum La. Replace day 5 with a second monastery day at Tawang and Urgelling, or the drive to Jang and a village walk. Carry several passport copies for check posts.
The daily rhythm on the Tawang road
Mountain days here follow a pattern. Mornings are clear, cloud builds on the passes from late morning, and by 3 pm Sela can be in fog. That is why every day in this plan starts between 6 and 8 am. We also avoid driving after dark between Bhalukpong and Tawang: the road is good now, but trucks, Army convoys and landslide patches make night driving slower and riskier.
Fill up with fuel at Tezpur, Bomdila or Dirang; stations are sparse beyond. Jio, Airtel and BSNL work in Tawang, Dirang and Bomdila towns, but signal is patchy on the passes and near Bum La. Tawang has a few ATMs, which sometimes run dry in peak season, so carry enough cash for the permit, local vehicle and small purchases.
Stays and food along the way
Dirang has a handful of good hotels and homestays along the river, and some of the quietest nights on the route. Tawang has the widest choice, from simple guesthouses to comfortable hotels with heating; ask specifically about room heaters and 24-hour hot water, which matter far more than a view in winter. Bomdila is functional, with smaller hotels near the market. Our guide to hotels in Tawang compares areas and seasons.
Food is Monpa and Tibetan-influenced: thukpa, momos, zan (millet dough) and butter tea, plus north Indian dishes everywhere. Vegetarians eat well in hotel restaurants. Carry dry snacks for the long day 1 and day 7, since good lunch stops are limited.
What to pack
- A down jacket, thermal inner layers, gloves and a warm cap, even in October
- Sunglasses and sunscreen; the sun at 4,000 m is strong
- Shoes with grip for snow and wet monastery steps
- Printed and digital copies of your ILP and original ID, plus 4 passport photos
- A basic medicine kit with painkillers and motion sickness tablets
Altitude sense on this route
Headaches and poor sleep on the first Tawang night are common and usually pass. Drink 3 to 4 litres of water a day, skip alcohol for the first two nights, and walk slowly. If symptoms get worse rather than better, go down: even Jang, about 40 km away, is noticeably lower. Anyone with heart or lung conditions should talk to a doctor before booking.
How we'd plan it
We would book the 7-day plan from Guwahati for most travellers, travelling in April, May, October or November, and apply for the ILP about two weeks before departure. We'd make sure day 4, the first full day in Tawang, is not a Sunday, so the Bum La permit goes in without delay, and keep the flight home for the morning after day 7. For couples, our Arunachal honeymoon route slows the pace with better hotels. If you want to combine Tawang with Meghalaya, see our northeast itinerary for 10 days.
