Shillong is a small city with a big traffic problem, and that should decide where you sleep before anything else does. A hotel 6 km from Police Bazar can mean 40 minutes in a queue of Sumos at 6 pm. Pick the right area and even a mid-range room works; pick the wrong one and the best room in town will not save your evenings.
We have organised this list by area and then by budget. Every hotel below is one we confirmed exists through its official website or the Meghalaya Tourism listing in September 2026. We have not included star ratings or review scores. Nightly bands are indicative 2026 ranges for a double room; always check the property for current rates.

The Heritage Club – Tripura Castle

- Why stay: built around the old summer residence of the Tripura royal family, with Assam-type architecture, over 40 rooms in seven categories, a spa, and The Stable Bar set in the former stables.
- Who it suits: couples and travellers who value character over a big-hotel feel.
- View: gardens and pine slopes rather than big panoramas.
- Indicative band: about ₹7,000–15,000 a night.
Polo Towers
- Area: Polo Grounds, a short taxi ride from Police Bazar.
- Why stay: a long-running Shillong hotel with a pool, spa, fitness centre and two restaurants, Sky Grill and Tring Tring. Its own site listed rooms from about ₹4,400 a night when we checked in September 2026.
- Who it suits: families and first-time visitors who want central convenience and facilities without top-tier prices.
- View: Ward's Lake and pine-covered hills from some rooms.
- Indicative band: about ₹4,500–9,000 a night.
IORA Shillong

- Why stay: a 40-room boutique hotel from the group that runs IORA – The Retreat at Kaziranga, in a greener, calmer part of town.
- Who it suits: couples and small families who want to be central but not in the Police Bazar crush.
- View: residential hills and greenery.
- Indicative band: about ₹5,000–9,000 a night.
Hotel Pegasus Crown

- Indicative band: about ₹3,000–6,000 a night.
Pinewood Hotel
- Area: European Ward, Rita Road, beside Police Bazar; listed on the Meghalaya Tourism website.

- View: the surrounding pines and old ward rather than long views; ask for an upper room.
- Indicative band: about ₹3,000–6,000 a night.
Laitumkhrah and homestays
Laitumkhrah is Shillong's café and college district, about 2–3 km from Police Bazar. It has fewer big hotels and more guesthouses and homestays, many in family homes. It suits travellers staying three or more nights, music lovers and anyone who plans to eat out most evenings; our guide to Shillong cafés, food and music covers the streets worth walking. Budget rooms and homestays here typically cost ₹1,200–2,500 a night. Choose places that are properly listed, because guest registration on the state app is mandatory for every accommodation.
Upper Shillong and Mylliem
Chapter Upper Shillong
- Area: Mylliem, about 20 minutes from Shillong, on a pine ridge at about 5,400 ft.
- Why stay: a 42-room resort with a large lawn, a heated pool, an all-day restaurant serving Khasi dishes, and a bar with a music focus. Room types include Paddy Field rooms facing farmland and round-house rooms.
- Who it suits: couples, groups of friends and families who want a resort without driving to Umiam; also a good base for Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls and the road to the Laitlum Canyons.
- View: pine forest and paddy fields.
- Indicative band: about ₹6,000–12,000 a night.
Upper Shillong is cooler than town by a couple of degrees, and mornings are often misty. It is a sensible choice if you are heading on to Sohra, since you avoid the town centre on your way out.
Umiam Lake
Umiam Lake is the reservoir you pass about 15 km before Shillong on the road from Guwahati. Staying here saves 30–45 minutes on arrival and departure days and gives you water views that town cannot.
Ri Kynjai – Serenity by the Lake
- Area: Umiam Lake, about 18 km from Shillong, in Ri Bhoi district.
- Why stay: cottages inspired by traditional Khasi thatch houses with upturned-boat roofs, set on the slope above the lake, with a spa and restaurant. Categories include lake-view cottages and forest-facing rooms.
- Who it suits: honeymooners and couples who want privacy and a slower pace.
- View: Umiam Lake from lake-view categories; forest from others.
- Indicative band: about ₹12,000–22,000 a night.
Orchid Lake Resort
- Area: Umiam, Ri Bhoi; listed on the Meghalaya Tourism website.
- Why stay: a simpler, lower-priced way to wake up by the lake, handy for arrival days from Guwahati.
- Who it suits: families and budget-minded couples who want a lake stay without resort prices.

What to expect from a Shillong room
Shillong sits at about 1,525 m, and that shapes the rooms. Air conditioning is rare and rarely needed; daytime highs stay in the low to mid-20s °C even in summer. Heating matters more: from November to February, a room without a heater is cold by 9 pm. Many older buildings are on slopes, so "ground floor" can mean two flights of steps down from the road, which matters for elders and heavy bags. Lifts are standard in the larger hotels but not in every guesthouse.
Most hotels serve Indian, Chinese and continental menus, and several of the newer ones add Khasi dishes such as jadoh (rice cooked with meat) and dohneiiong (pork with black sesame). Breakfast is almost always included at the standard tier and above. Check-in is usually around noon, which suits travellers arriving from Guwahati after a 3-hour drive.
Hotel or homestay
Hotels give you parking, a restaurant, a front desk and predictable heating. Homestays give you a Khasi family's kitchen, local advice and, often, a lower price. For a one or two-night stop on a busy itinerary, we pick hotels. For three or more nights, or for solo travellers who want to meet people, a well-run homestay in Laitumkhrah or Upper Shillong is often the better stay. Either way, choose a property that is properly listed and registers guests on the state app.
Arriving from Guwahati
Most visitors reach Shillong by road from Guwahati airport, about 3–3.5 hours. If your flight lands after 3 pm, a hotel at Umiam or on the Guwahati side of town saves a tired last hour in city traffic. Our Guwahati to Shillong guide covers private cars, shared taxis and timings.
Booking tips we follow
- Book early for peak weeks. Durga Puja in October, the Christmas and New Year fortnight and long weekends fill central hotels. We book 6–8 weeks ahead for these dates.
- Ask about heating. From November to February, Shillong nights drop to about 5–7°C. Confirm heaters and all-day hot water.
- Parking. Many central hotels have limited parking. If you have a hired car, check where the driver will park and sleep.
- Split stays. A night at Umiam on arrival and two in town works well; so does two in town and one in Upper Shillong before heading to Sohra.
- Monsoon value. From June to August many hotels discount rooms. Shillong is wet but green, and less crowded.
- Book direct or through a known operator. Some Meghalaya properties warn about look-alike booking sites. Use the hotel's own website, a major booking platform or an operator you have checked, and be wary of anyone asking for full payment by bank transfer to a personal account.
- Check the cancellation terms. Rain and landslides do occasionally close the Guwahati road for hours; flexible rates are worth a little extra in the monsoon.
For how rooms fit into the rest of a budget, see our Meghalaya trip cost guide. If you are heading on to Cherrapunji, our guide to where to stay in Cherrapunji covers the valley-edge resorts.
How we'd plan it
For a first 2-night stay in Shillong, we put most travellers in the Polo or Cleve Colony area: central enough to walk in the evening, quiet enough to sleep. On a longer Meghalaya trip, we like one night at Umiam on arrival day, two in town, then onwards to Sohra.
Our Shillong Weekend package uses central hotels such as Pinewood, Pegasus Crown, Polo Towers and Vivanta Meghalaya depending on tier, and the Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki and Mawlynnong trip pairs a Shillong hotel with a Sohra stay. Couples should look at the Meghalaya Honeymoon with a lake resort, or Luxury Meghalaya for the top tier throughout. For a day-by-day plan around your hotel, see our Shillong 3-day itinerary.
Tell us your dates and budget on our contact page and we will suggest two or three hotels that fit.
