Quick answer

The best resorts in Cherrapunji sit on the valley edge around Mawsmai, such as Polo Resort facing the Seven Sisters Falls, or near the root-bridge trails at Laitkynsew, such as Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort. La Kupar and Kutmadan Resort are mid-range picks. Expect about ₹3,500–8,000 a night mid-range and ₹10,000 upwards at the top in 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Choose by plan: Mawsmai for views and the falls, Laitkynsew for the Nongriat trek, Sohra town for convenience
  • Polo Resort Cherrapunji faces the Seven Sisters Falls and has an infinity pool; its own site listed rooms from about ₹10,900 in September 2026
  • Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort at Laitkynsew includes breakfast, evening tea and vegetarian dinner in its room rates
  • La Kupar's own site listed its Inn at about ₹3,500 and Vista rooms at about ₹6,500 with breakfast
  • Sohra has far fewer rooms than Shillong; book 6–8 weeks ahead for October to December weekends
  • Stay at least one night: day trips from Shillong lose 3–4 hours to driving and miss the morning light

The first rule of sleeping in Sohra is that the view you booked may not show up. Clouds roll up the valley walls within minutes, and a room facing the Seven Sisters Falls can face a white wall for an hour. That is not a reason to skip the valley-edge resorts. It is a reason to stay long enough to catch the clear moments, which usually come early in the morning.

We have grouped the stays below by area, because in Sohra (Cherrapunji) the area decides what you can do easily. Every resort named here was confirmed through its official website in September 2026. We do not publish star ratings or review scores; nightly bands are indicative 2026 ranges for a double room, and where a property's own site showed a rate, we say so.

Sohra's stay areas

Area Distance from Sohra market Best for Trade-off
Sohra town 0 km Budget stays, food, shared taxis Few views, basic rooms
Mawsmai and Nongthymmai About 3–5 km Valley views, Seven Sisters Falls, Mawsmai Cave You rely on the resort for meals

Nongriat village Trek of 3,500 steps from Tyrna Waking beside the root bridges No road; simple homestays only
Kutmadan and outer villages Varies Quiet stone cottages Need your own car

For what to see in each direction, our Cherrapunji travel guide lays out the sights by road.

Mawsmai: the valley edge

Polo Resort, Cherrapunji

  • Area: Mawsmai, Nongthymmai, on a hilltop opposite the Seven Sisters Falls, about 4 km from Sohra market and close to Mawsmai Cave.
  • Why stay: the most complete resort in Sohra, with an infinity pool facing the valley, a spa, three restaurants and 11 room categories, from compact Orchid rooms and log huts with plunge pools to Waterfall Pool Suites and a sky-pool villa.
  • Who it suits: honeymooners and couples, families wanting facilities for a rainy afternoon, and anyone who wants the falls outside the window.
  • View: the Seven Sisters Falls and the plains of Bangladesh on clear days from valley-facing rooms.
  • Indicative band: from about ₹10,900 a night on its own site in September 2026, with suites and pool rooms well above that.

Staying at Mawsmai puts Nohkalikai Falls about 20–30 minutes away by car, so you can be at the viewpoint soon after sunrise, before cloud fills the gorge.

Laitkynsew: the root-bridge side

Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort

  • Area: Laitkynsew village, on the southern side of Sohra towards the root-bridge trails.
  • Why stay: a long-running, Khasi-run resort with 23 rooms in four categories, from non-AC standard rooms to superior valley-view rooms. Its rates include breakfast, evening tea and a vegetarian dinner, and the staff are young Khasi men and women from nearby villages. The resort is known for guided nature treks to the living root bridges.
  • Who it suits: trekkers heading to Nongriat, families, and travellers who want local guidance built into the stay.
  • View: the southern valley and, on clear days, the plains below from valley-view rooms.
  • Indicative band: about ₹8,100–12,300 a night on its own site in September 2026, with some meals included.

Laitkynsew is the right base for the double decker root bridge at Nongriat. You can reach the Tyrna trailhead early, walk down before the day heats up, and be back for a hot shower and dinner. Our double decker root bridge trek guide covers the steps, timings and what to carry.

Sohra hilltop and town

La Kupar Inn and Vista by La Kupar

  • Area: a hilltop in Sohra, about 45 km from Shillong by the property's own description.
  • Why stay: a small boutique operation with two parts: La Kupar Inn with 10 rooms, and Vista by La Kupar with 5 rooms. Its own site listed about ₹3,500 a night for the Inn and about ₹6,500 for Vista, both with breakfast, when we checked in September 2026.
  • Who it suits: couples and small groups who want a calm, well-run stay without resort prices; Vista suits honeymooners on a sensible budget.
  • View: hills and cloud from the hilltop, with the valley in the distance.
  • Indicative band: about ₹3,500 (Inn) and ₹6,500 (Vista) with breakfast.

Budget stays in Sohra town

Sohra market has a handful of guesthouses and homestays at about ₹1,500–2,800 a night. They are simple, sometimes without views, but they put you beside the shared taxi stand and the few eateries that stay open into the evening. They suit solo travellers and anyone arriving by shared taxi from Shillong. Choose properties that are properly listed and register guests on the state app, as every Meghalaya accommodation must.

Kutmadan and the quieter villages

Kutmadan Resort

  • Area: Kutmadan village, Sohra.
  • Why stay: cottages built from locally quarried Sohra stone in a style drawn from traditional Khasi stone architecture, with Khasi and Indian meals and hot water.
  • Who it suits: groups of friends and families who want a quiet village setting and have their own car.
  • View: surrounding hills.
  • Indicative band: about ₹4,000–8,000 a night, our estimate; check directly.

The resort itself warns guests to book only through its official channels because of look-alike booking pages. We follow the same rule for every Sohra property: book on the official site, a major booking platform, or through an operator you have checked.

Nongriat homestays

Nongriat has no road. You reach it by walking down roughly 3,500 steps from Tyrna, crossing steel-wire suspension bridges over the river, and arriving at the double decker root bridge. The village has several family homestays with simple rooms, basic bathrooms and home-cooked rice, dal and vegetables or meat, typically well under ₹1,500 per person with meals. Pay in cash.

A night here is worth it if you are fit and not in a hurry. You get the natural pools below the bridge and the trail on to Rainbow Falls with fewer people, and you climb out in the cool of the next morning. Carry a light bag, a torch and dry clothes in a plastic bag.

Resort or homestay

A resort gives you a heated room, a restaurant, parking and staff who can arrange a guide for the next morning. A Sohra homestay gives you a Khasi family's kitchen, advice on which trail is slippery this week, and usually half the price. On a short trip with a hired car, we lean towards resorts because meals and parking are sorted. For solo travellers, trekkers and anyone staying three nights or more, a good homestay near Laitkynsew or in Nongriat often makes the better memory. Whichever you pick, carry cash for village fees and small purchases; card machines and ATMs are unreliable outside Sohra market.

Questions to ask before you book

Sohra resorts vary more than Shillong hotels, and the listing photos are usually taken on the one clear day of the month. These are the questions we ask on behalf of our guests:

  • Is the room valley-facing, or does "valley view" mean the restaurant? Many properties have only some rooms on the edge.
  • Is dinner served, and until what time? In Sohra this is not a small detail.
  • Where does the driver stay? Some resorts have driver rooms; others expect drivers to find a place in town.
  • How is the last stretch of road? A few properties sit down steep village lanes that are tricky after heavy rain.
  • Is there power backup and hot water all day? Storms cause cuts, and hot water matters after a trek.
  • Heaters from November to February? Nights are cold, and some rooms charge extra for heaters.

Staying further out: Mawsynram and beyond

West of Sohra, Mawsynram competes with Cherrapunji for the title of the wettest place on earth and has only a few simple homestays and guesthouses. It works as a day trip from a Mawsmai or Sohra base rather than a stay, unless you want the rain itself as the experience. Travellers on longer trips who want to push further should plan on basic rooms and cash payments, and let someone in Sohra know their route.

If Dawki and Mawlynnong are also on your list, note that they sit on a different road, south-east of Shillong. Most people do them from Shillong or with a night near the Umngot river, not from Sohra.

Which stay for which trip

Trip type Our first pick Alternative
Honeymoon with views Polo Resort Vista by La Kupar
Nongriat trek Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort A Nongriat homestay
Family, 2 nights Polo Resort Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort
Value couple La Kupar Inn Sohra town guesthouse
Group of friends with a car Kutmadan Resort La Kupar

When to book and what to expect

Sohra has far fewer rooms than Shillong, and weekend demand from Guwahati and Shillong is high. For October to December weekends, Durga Puja and the New Year fortnight, we book 6–8 weeks ahead. Midweek stays are easier.

Weather shapes the stay more than anything. Sohra gets about 11 metres of rain a year, with about 2.6 metres in each of June and July. In the monsoon, expect cloud, heavy showers and the falls at their fullest; bring shoes with grip. From November to February the air is clear and the falls thinner, and nights drop to single digits, so ask about heaters. Our monsoon in Meghalaya guide covers the wet months in detail.

A practical note on food: Sohra is not a late-night town. Most eateries close by early evening, so a stay that serves dinner, or includes it, saves a lot of trouble. The larger resorts have in-house restaurants; smaller ones cook on request if you tell them by the afternoon.

Getting there

Sohra is about 55 km from Shillong, 1.5 to 2 hours by car via Mawkdok, where the Dympep viewpoint looks over the gorge. Shared taxis leave from Bara Bazar in Shillong through the day. From Guwahati, allow 4.5 to 5 hours door to door. If you are splitting nights, pair Sohra with a Shillong hotel from our best hotels in Shillong list. For costs by tier, see our Meghalaya trip cost guide.

How we'd plan it

We put most first-time visitors in Sohra for two nights. Night one at Mawsmai, for the falls, Mawsmai Cave and the valley views; night two at Laitkynsew, so the Nongriat trek starts early the next morning. Trekkers with the legs for it can swap night two for a Nongriat homestay.

Our Shillong and Cherrapunji package builds in a Sohra night; the Living Root Bridges Trek adds a night in Nongriat and uses Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort at its premium tier. Couples should look at the Meghalaya Honeymoon, and families with a week at Complete Meghalaya.

Send your dates and budget on our contact page and we will check availability at two or three of these stays for you.

Good to know

Questions people ask

01Which is the best resort in Cherrapunji?

It depends on your plan. For views and comfort, Polo Resort at Mawsmai faces the Seven Sisters Falls and has an infinity pool. For the Nongriat root-bridge trek, Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort at Laitkynsew is the long-established choice. For mid-range value, La Kupar and Kutmadan Resort are good options. Book ahead for October to December.

02How much does a resort in Cherrapunji cost per night?

In 2026, budget guesthouses and homestays in Sohra cost about ₹1,500–2,800 a night, mid-range resorts ₹3,500–8,000, and the top resorts ₹10,000 and upwards. Some rates include dinner, which matters because Sohra has few restaurants open late. Prices rise over Durga Puja, Christmas and New Year and fall in the monsoon.

03Should I stay in Cherrapunji or do a day trip from Shillong?

Stay at least one night if you can. Sohra is about 55 km from Shillong, 1.5 to 2 hours each way, so a day trip spends 3–4 hours driving. Staying lets you see the falls in morning light before the clouds rise, and it is essential if you plan the Nongriat trek.

04Where should I stay for the double decker root bridge trek?

Stay at Laitkynsew or near the Tyrna trailhead so you can start walking early, or sleep in a homestay in Nongriat itself at the bottom of the steps. Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort at Laitkynsew is the best-known resort for this. A Nongriat night lets you swim in the pools and climb out in the cool of the morning.

05Are there homestays in Nongriat village?

Yes. Nongriat has several simple family homestays near the double decker root bridge, with basic rooms, shared or simple attached bathrooms and home-cooked meals. There is no road, so you carry what you need down the steps. Payment is usually in cash. Book through a Sohra contact or arrive early in the day.

06Which Cherrapunji resort is best for a honeymoon?

Most couples choose Polo Resort at Mawsmai for its valley views, infinity pool and suites with private plunge pools. La Kupar's Vista rooms suit couples who want a quieter, smaller boutique stay at a lower price. Ask for valley-facing rooms, and plan for mist: views come and go within minutes in Sohra.

07Is Cherrapunji good to visit in the monsoon?

Yes, if you like rain. Sohra gets about 2.6 metres of rain in each of June and July, and the falls are at full flow. Views often vanish in cloud and trails get slippery, but resorts are quieter and often discount rooms. Pack proper rain gear and keep one flexible day.

08Do Cherrapunji resorts have restaurants?

The larger resorts, such as Polo Resort and Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort, have in-house dining, and most mid-range stays serve breakfast and dinner. Sohra town has a handful of eateries, but most close early. We advise booking a stay that serves dinner, especially if you arrive after dark.

09How far is Cherrapunji from Shillong?

Sohra is about 55 km from Shillong by road, a drive of 1.5 to 2 hours through Mawkdok and the Dympep valley viewpoint. Shared taxis run from Bara Bazar in Shillong during the day. Resorts at Laitkynsew and Mawsmai are a further 5–15 km beyond Sohra town, depending on the property.
