Quick answer

A honeymoon in Meghalaya works best from October to April, over five nights: two in a lakeside or city stay near Shillong, two in a valley-view hotel at Sohra, and a day for Dawki's clear river and Mawlynnong. Add Kaziranga for wildlife or Tawang for snow if you have eight nights or more.

Key takeaways

  • October to April gives the clearest views and running boats at Dawki; December to February adds cold, clear nights
  • Five nights is the sweet spot for Meghalaya alone; eight nights lets you add Kaziranga or Tawang
  • Split your stays: Umiam Lake or Shillong for comfort and cafés, Sohra for views of the gorges
  • Dawki's glass-clear river is a November to April experience; in the monsoon boats are often suspended
  • Snow at Sela Pass and Tawang is most likely from December to March; that route needs Arunachal ILPs and warm clothes
  • Pick flights that land in Guwahati before 1 pm so the first drive ends in daylight

Most honeymoon enquiries we get start with a photograph: a small boat that seems to float on air over a clear green river. That picture is Dawki, and it is real, but only between roughly November and April. Everything good about a Meghalaya honeymoon works the same way. Pick the right month and the right bases, and the trip largely plans itself.

Is Meghalaya the right honeymoon for you

Meghalaya suits couples who would rather walk to a waterfall than sit by a pool. There are no beaches and little nightlife outside Shillong's cafés, but there are gorges filled with cloud, lakes with pine hills, root bridges and some of the quietest roads in India.

It is a good fit if you want:

  • Short drives, mostly 1.5–3 hours between stays
  • Cool weather when the plains are hot
  • A mix of comfortable hotels and simple, characterful homestays
  • Photographs you will not find in every other honeymoon album

It is a weaker fit if you want beaches, a single resort for a week, or guaranteed sunshine. For snow, you need to add Arunachal; we cover that below.

Best months for a Meghalaya honeymoon

Months Weather What couples get Watch out for
October–November Clear, green, 12–22 °C in Shillong Full falls, clear views, Dawki reopening Diwali week crowds
December–February Cold, dry, clear; Shillong nights average about 6 °C in January Sharpest views, clearest river, cosy evenings Christmas–New Year prices and traffic
March–April Mild, some showers Quieter roads, blossoms in places Pre-monsoon storms by April
May Warm, stormy Low season Heavy rain begins
June–September Heavy rain, fog Waterfalls at full power, few tourists Boating suspended, road delays

Most Indian weddings cluster in November to February, which lines up well with Meghalaya's best weather. Book at least two months ahead for December honeymoons. If you are marrying in the rains, read our guide to Meghalaya in the monsoon before you rule it out; some couples love the cloud and the empty viewpoints.

Four ways to shape the trip

Couples usually land on one of four routes. The right one depends on how many nights you have and whether wildlife or snow matters.

Style Nights Route Best months
Meghalaya only 4–5 Shillong or Umiam, Sohra, Dawki, Mawlynnong October–April
Meghalaya and Kaziranga 7–8 Add 2 nights at Kaziranga for jeep safaris November–April
Arunachal snow 6–7 Bomdila, Dirang, Sela Pass, Tawang December–March for snow
Grand Northeast 8–10 Meghalaya, Kaziranga and Tawang November–March

Our view: for a first Northeast trip, five nights in Meghalaya is the most relaxed and has the least time in the car. The Tawang route is spectacular but has two long mountain days of 6–8 hours each way.

Where to stay: split your nights

We rarely put a honeymoon couple in one hotel for the whole trip. Meghalaya's best moments happen at dawn in different places, so it pays to sleep close to them.

Umiam Lake or Shillong, 2 nights. Resorts around Umiam, 15–17 km before Shillong on the Guwahati road, give you water views and quiet mornings. Staying in Shillong itself puts you near Laitumkhrah's cafés, live music and good restaurants. Couples who like evenings out should choose the city; those who want quiet should choose the lake.

Sohra, 2 nights. Choose a hotel on the edge of the plateau with a valley view. At dawn, the cloud sits in the gorges below you and lifts as the sun warms it. Hotels here range from simple family-run stays to comfortable resorts; ask specifically for a valley-facing room.

Mawlynnong or Shnongpdeng, optional 1 night. Bamboo homestays in Mawlynnong and riverside camps at Shnongpdeng are simple, with shared or basic bathrooms in many cases. They work for adventurous couples; others visit on a day trip.

For hotel shortlists, see our best hotels in Shillong and where to stay in Cherrapunji guides.

Moments worth planning around

These are the experiences couples mention most when they write back to us.

  • Sunrise over the Sohra gorges. Be at the valley edge by 5:30 am in winter. Fifteen minutes of light on the cloud is worth the alarm.
  • A picnic at Laitlum. The canyon rim is about 25 km from Shillong. Go on a clear weekday morning, bring a flask of tea and stay well back from the unfenced edge.
  • The Dawki boat ride. On the Umngot at Dawki, rowboats carry two to four people. Aim for 8–9 am from November to April, before crowds arrive.
  • A night by the river at Shnongpdeng. In the dry months, camps set up on the banks upstream of Dawki. Kayaking and cliff jumping are offered; wear life jackets.
  • Live music in Shillong. The city's café culture runs on guitars. Our Shillong cafés guide lists places that currently host music nights.
  • Walking Mawlynnong at dusk. After day visitors leave around 4 pm, the village goes quiet and you can walk the lanes alone.
  • Umiam at golden hour. Stop at a lakeside viewpoint on the way back from Shillong for the last light over the reservoir.

Adding Kaziranga or Tawang

Kaziranga adds a completely different mood: grassland, early jeep safaris and rhinos, 4.5–5 hours from Guwahati. Two nights let you do a morning and an afternoon safari. Kaziranga normally closes from May to September and reopens in stages from October, so check current status before you travel.

Tawang is for couples who want snow and mountains. The road crosses Sela Pass at about 4,170 metres to reach Tawang at about 2,700 metres, with a stop at Dirang to adjust to altitude. Indians need an Arunachal Inner Line Permit; foreigners need a Protected Area Permit. Snow is most likely from December to March but varies year to year. Our Arunachal honeymoon via Dirang, Sela and Tawang is built around a slow pace for this route.

Practical things couples ask

IDs. Carry a government photo ID for both of you. Hotels register every guest, and Arunachal permits need ID details.

Privacy. Homestays are charming but walls are often thin and bathrooms may be shared. If privacy matters, save homestays for a single night.

Dining. Shillong has the widest choice of restaurants, bars and cafés. Sohra is quieter, with hotel dining and a few local eateries. Most resorts can arrange a private dinner if you ask a day ahead.

Sundays. Much of Meghalaya is Christian, and many shops and some cafés close or open late on Sundays. Plan drives or viewpoints for that day rather than shopping.

Drivers. A good driver makes the trip, and in Meghalaya it is the only option: renting private cars to tourists for self-drive has been prohibited since June 2025. Ask for one who knows the Sohra and Dawki roads, and finish drives before dark, especially in fog. In August 2026, a dispute over Assam-registered tourist taxis in Meghalaya disrupted some trips until the two state governments set up a joint panel in September; confirm with your operator how your vehicle is arranged, and check current status before you travel.

What shapes the cost

We do not quote a single honeymoon price here, because five choices move the total far more than the destination does. Knowing them helps you compare quotes fairly.

  1. Hotel tier. The jump from a standard hotel to a lakeside resort or a valley-view room in Sohra is the biggest single change. Two special nights and three comfortable ones is a common compromise.
  2. Season. Christmas, New Year and Diwali weeks cost more and sell out early. Late January, February and March often give the same clear weather for less.
  3. Car type. A sedan is cheaper, but an SUV handles the Sohra and Dawki roads with more comfort and luggage room. A private car for the whole trip is standard; shared transfers save money but cost time.
  4. Route length. Every night added in Kaziranga or Tawang adds hotel, safari or permit costs and a long drive. Arunachal trips also need more fuel and a driver who knows the mountain roads.
  5. Flights. Guwahati fares swing widely by date. Booking 6–8 weeks ahead, and avoiding Friday evening arrivals, usually helps.

When comparing quotes, check whether breakfast and dinner are included, whether the car is yours for the full day or only for point-to-point transfers, and whether entry tickets, Dawki boats and safari fees are in or out.

Photographs that work

Most couples want a few frames they will print. Meghalaya is generous if you plan for light and weather.

  • Shoot early. From 6 to 8 am the light is soft and viewpoints are empty. By 11 am, Dawki and the big falls fill with visitors.
  • Use the fog. A couple silhouetted against cloud in a Sohra gorge often looks better than a clear blue sky.
  • Bring a small tripod or ask your driver; most are used to taking photos.
  • Wear colour. Deep reds, mustard and teal stand out against the green hills; white and black wash out.
  • Ask before photographing locals, especially in Mawlynnong and at markets.
  • Drones need local permission in many places and are restricted near border areas, including the Dawki riverfront by the Bangladesh border. Check the rules first.

Some couples hire a local photographer in Shillong for a half-day shoot at Umiam or Laitlum. If you do, look at a full gallery of their recent work, agree the locations and the number of edited images in writing, and plan the shoot for your clearest-weather morning rather than the day you arrive. Shillong has a young, active creative scene, and a local photographer will also know which viewpoints are quiet on which days.

A monsoon honeymoon, if your dates are fixed

Weddings in June and July are rarer but they happen, and Meghalaya does not have to be ruled out. The trade-off is simple: waterfalls at full power, emerald hills and empty viewpoints, against fog, road delays and no Dawki boats.

If you go in the rains, stay longer in fewer places. Four nights split between Shillong and Sohra, with a spare day, works better than racing to Dawki and back. Choose hotels with good views from the room itself, since you may spend more time indoors, and plan for rainy-afternoon café sessions in Shillong.

Safety for couples

Meghalaya is generally calm and friendly. What needs planning is the terrain, not people:

  • Stay behind railings and well back from grass edges at Laitlum, Nohkalikai and the Sohra viewpoints.
  • Do not swim in rivers or pools after rain, including at Krang Suri and the root bridge pools.
  • Share your itinerary and hotel names with family.
  • Keep drives to daylight hours.
  • Carry cash for places where networks drop.

Our Northeast safety guide covers the wider region, including current advisories for Manipur.

How we'd plan it

For most couples, we suggest a five-night Meghalaya honeymoon:

  1. Day 1: Guwahati Airport to Umiam Lake (about 100 km, 2.5 hours). Evening by the water.
  2. Day 2: Laitlum morning picnic, Shillong cafés and a live music evening.
  3. Day 3: To Sohra via Mawkdok valley viewpoint; Nohkalikai at sunset.
  4. Day 4: Sunrise over the gorges, Mawsmai Cave, Wei Sawdong or Seven Sisters.
  5. Day 5: Mawlynnong, then the Dawki boats in season; back to Shillong.
  6. Day 6: Shillong to Guwahati Airport, leaving by 9 am.

This is close to our five-night Meghalaya honeymoon plan. For more comfortable stays and a private car throughout, the Luxury Meghalaya route with Umiam and Laitlum upgrades each night.

With more time, the eight-night Northeast honeymoon with Kaziranga and Tawang links Meghalaya with the grasslands and the mountains. Couples who want top-tier stays across Assam and Meghalaya should look at the nine-night Luxury Northeast trip.

Good to know

Questions people ask

01Is Meghalaya good for a honeymoon?

Yes, for couples who like green hills, waterfalls, quiet drives and good food more than beaches or nightlife. Distances are short, hotels near Shillong and Sohra range from simple to upscale, and the pace is gentle. It suits nature lovers and photographers. Couples wanting snow should add Tawang; those wanting a beach resort should look elsewhere.

02What is the best month for a honeymoon in Meghalaya?

October and November are our first choice: green hills, full waterfalls, clear skies and boats running at Dawki. December to February is colder and drier, with the clearest views and cosy nights. March and April are mild with some showers. June to September is lush but rainy and foggy, which some couples love and others find limiting.

03How many days are enough for a Meghalaya honeymoon?

Five nights is ideal for Meghalaya alone: two nights near Shillong or Umiam Lake, two in Sohra and a day trip to Dawki and Mawlynnong. Four nights works if you drop a slow morning. With eight nights you can add Kaziranga for a safari, and with nine or ten you can add Tawang in Arunachal.

04Which is better for a honeymoon, Meghalaya or Tawang?

They suit different couples. Meghalaya is easier, greener and warmer, with short drives and waterfalls. Tawang offers snow, monasteries and high passes but needs an Arunachal permit, long mountain drives of 6–8 hours and warm clothing. If you want snow and do not mind the drives, go to Tawang; otherwise start with Meghalaya.

05Can we do the Dawki boat ride on our honeymoon?

Yes, if you travel between roughly November and April, when the Umngot is clear and calm. Rowboats take two to four people for a short ride and life jackets are provided. In the monsoon the river turns silty and boats are often suspended. Go early in the morning to avoid the crowds that build up by late morning.

06Where should couples stay in Meghalaya?

Split your nights. Around Umiam Lake, resorts give water views 15–17 km from Shillong. In Shillong itself, heritage and boutique hotels put you close to cafés and live music. In Sohra, pick a hotel on the valley edge so you can walk out to the view at dawn. Mawlynnong and Shnongpdeng offer simple homestays and riverside camps.

07Is Meghalaya safe for honeymoon couples?

Meghalaya is generally calm and welcoming to couples. The practical risks are road-related: landslides in the monsoon, fog and night driving on hill roads. Use a registered driver, finish drives before dark, share your itinerary with family and stay back from unfenced edges at Laitlum and Sohra. Check current advisories and road status before you travel.

08Can we see snow on a Northeast honeymoon?

Yes, on the Tawang route in Arunachal Pradesh. Sela Pass at about 4,170 metres often has snow from December to March, and Tawang town sometimes does. Meghalaya itself does not get snow. You need Arunachal ILPs, at least six nights for the round trip from Guwahati, and proper winter clothing. Snowfall varies year to year, so keep expectations flexible.

09What should couples pack for a Meghalaya honeymoon?

Pack quick-dry clothes, a rain jacket in any season, shoes with grip for steps and wet rock, and a warm layer for Shillong evenings. From November to February add a proper jacket. Bring one smarter outfit for a nice dinner, a power bank and a small dry bag for phones at the waterfalls and on the Dawki boats.
