In short

This 4 nights / 5 days trip from Guwahati goes east of Shillong into the Jaintia Hills, home of the Pnar people. You see the Nartiang monoliths and Durga temple, spend two nights in Jowai, swim at Krang Suri Falls in season, and visit Thadlaskein Lake and Syntu Ksiar. From ₹15,500 per person with a private car.

Most visitors to Meghalaya turn south to Sohra and Dawki and never see the hills east of Shillong. The Jaintia Hills are quieter and different in character: the Pnar people, the old Jaintia kingdom whose summer capital was at Nartiang, a Durga temple where the goddess is worshipped in the form of a plantain trunk, and a field of standing stones that includes one of the tallest menhirs in the region.

Jowai, 64 km from Shillong at about 1,380 m, is the base for two nights. From there Krang Suri Falls, with its clear blue pool, is an easy morning trip, and the Myntdu river valley at Syntu Ksiar and Ialong Park is close to town. Hotels in Jowai are simple, and that is part of the trade: you get places with few tourists and a strong sense of local life, especially at the Iawmusiang market.

Highlights

  • Nartiang, a field of standing stones and table stones linked to the Jaintia kings, with a menhir of about 8 m
  • Nartiang Durga Temple, revered as one of the 51 Shakti peethas, where Hindu and local traditions meet
  • Krang Suri Falls and its blue pool, with swimming in life jackets when the pool is open
  • Thadlaskein Lake, tied in Pnar tradition to the story of 290 clans
  • Syntu Ksiar on the Myntdu river and the memorial to the Jaintia leader Kiang Nangbah
  • Iawmusiang, one of the oldest markets in the Jaintia Hills

Leave Jowai around noon and drive 64 km back to Shillong on the NH-6, arriving by mid-afternoon. The evening is free. Jaintia Hills: Jowai, Krang Suri and Nartiang: questions

01Where are the Jaintia Hills?

The Jaintia Hills are the eastern part of Meghalaya, split into West and East Jaintia Hills districts. Jowai, the main town, is 64 km east of Shillong on the NH-6 at about 1,380 m. The area is home to the Pnar people and was once the core of the Jaintia kingdom.

02What are the Nartiang monoliths?

Nartiang has a large group of upright stones (menhirs) and flat table stones (dolmens) raised by the Jaintia kings and clans to mark events and honour the dead. The tallest menhir is about 8 m, among the tallest in the region. The site is about 2 hours from Shillong.

03Can you swim at Krang Suri Falls?

Swimming has been allowed in a marked section of the pool with a hired life jacket, mainly from November to May, under local supervision. The pool is deep and cold, and it often closes to swimmers in the monsoon because of strong currents. Rules and fees are set locally; check current status before you travel.

04What does the Jaintia Hills package cost?

It starts at ₹15,500 per person on twin sharing with standard hotels in Shillong and Jowai, breakfast and dinner, and a private sedan. Upgrading Shillong to a premium or luxury hotel adds about ₹2,500 to ₹6,000 per person; Jowai has limited upgrade options.

05What is Behdienkhlam and when is it held?

Behdienkhlam is the main festival of the Pnar people, held in Jowai in July. Its name refers to driving away plague and evil. Communities carry tall decorated structures to a pool and play a football-like game with a wooden ball. Dates are set locally each year, so check current status before you travel.

06Is the Nartiang Durga Temple open to all visitors?

Yes, visitors of all faiths may enter with respect. The temple dates from the Jaintia kingdom and is revered as one of the 51 Shakti peethas. The goddess is worshipped as a plantain trunk decorated with marigolds. Durga Puja in October is its busiest time. Remove shoes and dress modestly.

07Can we add Dawki to this trip?

Yes. From Krang Suri the road continues south through Amlarem to Dawki. With one extra night, you can take an early boat on the Umngot and return to Shillong via Pynursla. Boating runs mainly from November to April and is often suspended in the monsoon.

08Is this trip suitable for seniors?

Mostly, yes. Nartiang, Thadlaskein, Syntu Ksiar and Ialong Park involve short, easy walks. Krang Suri has steps down to the pool that can be steep and wet; seniors can watch from the upper viewpoint. Drives are short, with the longest about 3 hours.

09Do we need a permit for the Jaintia Hills?

No permit is needed for Indian or foreign tourists. Meghalaya has no ILP, but hotels register every guest on the state tourism app, so carry original photo ID. Do not approach the Bangladesh border south of Amlarem beyond the public roads.
