Quick answer

April is a strong shoulder month for Northeast India. Rongali Bihu fills Assam around 14–15 April, Kaziranga runs its last safari weeks before the monsoon closure, Tawang is cool and clear with snow still possible at Sela, and Shillong sits at about 14–23 °C. Expect evening thunderstorms and rising heat on the Assam plains.

Key takeaways

  • Rongali (Bohag) Bihu, the Assamese New Year, peaks on 14–15 April with Goru Bihu and Manuh Bihu; celebrations run for about a week.
  • Kaziranga is in its final weeks of the season and usually closes for the monsoon from about May; short grass makes rhino sightings easier.
  • Approximate ranges: Guwahati 20–31 °C, Shillong 14–23 °C, Sohra 14–23 °C with heavy pre-monsoon showers, Tawang roughly 0–14 °C.
  • Sela Pass can still hold snow in early April, and Bum La generally operates, subject to weather and army orders.
  • Evening thunderstorms, known locally as Bordoisila, are common; plan outdoor sightseeing for mornings.
  • April is quieter than October or December; book 3–5 weeks ahead, and earlier for Bihu week in Assam.

April is the one month when you can ride a jeep through Kaziranga in the morning, watch Bihu dancers in the evening, and still find snow on the road to Tawang a few days later. It sits between the dry winter and the monsoon, and it is one of our favourite months to plan a longer Northeast trip.

The catches are heat on the Assam plains, evening thunderstorms, and a narrowing Kaziranga window as May approaches. Here is how April plays out across the region.

April weather across the region

Long-term averages, rounded and approximate. Pre-monsoon storms make April weather more changeable than December's.

Place Day high (approx.) Night low (approx.) April rain (approx.) Feel
Guwahati 31 °C 20 °C about 180 mm Warm, humid, evening storms
Kaziranga (Tezpur normals) 30 °C 20 °C about 170 mm Hot afternoons, easy mornings
Shillong 23 °C 14 °C about 130 mm Mild, bright mornings
Sohra (Cherrapunji) 23 °C 14 °C about 790 mm Heavy showers returning
Tawang (modelled, approximate) 10–14 °C around 0 °C about 250 mm Cool and clear, cold nights

Two things stand out. Sohra's April rainfall is already about six times Shillong's, a sign the monsoon is building in the south of Meghalaya. And the Assam plains are noticeably warmer than in March, so the hills feel like a relief.

Bordoisila, the April storms

Assam calls the spring thunderstorms Bordoisila. They build on hot afternoons and break in the late afternoon or evening with strong wind, hail on some days and a sharp drop in temperature. They usually pass within an hour or two.

What this means for planning:

  • do viewpoints, safaris and long walks in the morning
  • keep the late afternoon for drives, cafes or indoor stops
  • avoid river crossings and boat rides when a storm is building
  • expect the occasional flight delay at Guwahati on stormy evenings

Rongali Bihu in Assam

Rongali Bihu, also called Bohag Bihu, is the Assamese New Year and the state's biggest festival. It marks the start of the sowing season.

  • Goru Bihu, 14 April. Cattle are bathed in rivers and ponds and honoured.
  • Manuh Bihu, 15 April. New Year's Day: new clothes, visits to elders, gamusa gifts.
  • The days after. Husori groups go house to house singing, and community stages (Bihutoli) host dance and music for about a week.

Guwahati has the largest stage events. Upper Assam, including Sivasagar, Jorhat and Majuli, gives a more village-level experience. Our Rongali Bihu in Assam package is built around this week. Stage schedules are announced locally, so check current status before you travel.

Bihu week also means Assamese families travel and celebrate at home. Some shops and offices close on 14–15 April, and local transport is busier.

Shad Suk Mynsiem in Shillong

The Khasi spring festival, Shad Suk Mynsiem, is held in Shillong in April, usually over three days at the Weiking ground in Jaiaw. Unmarried women in traditional silk and gold ornaments dance in the centre with small, measured steps, while men with swords and fly-whisks circle around them to drums and pipes. It is a thanksgiving for the harvest and a welcome to the sowing season.

Dates are set each year by the organisers. If you want to see it, confirm the dates in March and plan your Shillong nights around them.

Other spring festivals around April

Bihu and Shad Suk Mynsiem are the two big ones, but several communities mark the new year or the sowing season around the same time.

Festival Community and place Usual timing Worth knowing
Rongali Bihu Assamese, across Assam 14–15 April, with a week of events Largest stages in Guwahati; village Bihu in Upper Assam
Bwisagu Bodo, western Assam Mid-April, alongside Bihu Celebrated in Bodoland districts near Manas
Shad Suk Mynsiem Khasi, Shillong April, usually three days Held at the Weiking ground in Jaiaw
Aoleang Konyak Naga, Mon district Early April Remote; needs Nagaland ILP and a long drive
Sajibu Cheiraoba Meitei, Manipur March or April, by lunar calendar Manipuri New Year; family-centred

Dates for community festivals are announced locally and can shift by a few days year to year. Check current status before you travel, and ask us to confirm the programme before you lock in flights.

Who April suits

April works well for:

  • Wildlife travellers who want Kaziranga with short grass and fewer vehicles.
  • Culture seekers timing a trip to Bihu or Shad Suk Mynsiem.
  • Couples and friends heading to Tawang for cool, bright days and a chance of snow at Sela without deep-winter cold.
  • Travellers who want a long, mixed trip covering plains and hills in one go.

It suits these travellers less:

  • Families who dislike heat. Assam afternoons in the low 30s °C, with humidity, can be tiring for small children and seniors.
  • Anyone who wants full Meghalaya waterfalls. They are only starting to refill; October is better.
  • Travellers with fixed plans and no flexibility for a thunderstorm afternoon.

Getting around in April

Road distances do not change with the season, but April traffic and storms do affect timings.

  • Guwahati to Kaziranga: about 195 km, 4.5–5.5 hours. Start early to avoid the midday heat and afternoon storms.
  • Kaziranga to Shillong: about 5–6 hours via Guwahati's edge and NH6.
  • Guwahati to Shillong: about 100 km from the city, around 3 hours, more on stormy evenings.
  • Guwahati to Tawang: a two-day drive via Bhalukpong and Dirang, crossing Sela on day two.

During Bihu week, city traffic in Guwahati is heavier around stage venues in the evening, and some local taxis take the main days off. We confirm drivers well in advance for 14–15 April.

Kaziranga's last weeks

Kaziranga is usually in its final month of the season in April, with the park closing to tourists around the start of May for the monsoon. The exact closing date is set each year, and early floods can bring it forward, so check current status before you travel.

Why April is good for a safari:

  • Short grass. Controlled burning in winter clears the tall elephant grass, and fresh shoots draw rhinos, buffaloes and deer into the open.
  • Water sources shrink, so animals gather around the remaining wetlands.
  • Fewer vehicles than in December or February.

The downsides are heat after 10 am and haze on some days. We book the earliest jeep or elephant safari and keep the afternoon for a short drive or rest. Our Kaziranga Safari Break is a simple two-night add-on, and our best time to visit Kaziranga guide compares months in detail.

Tawang, Sela and Bum La in April

April is one of the two best windows for Tawang, along with October and November. Days are cool and bright, and the road is more predictable than in deep winter.

  • Sela Pass at about 4,170 m often still holds snow on the slopes in early April, and occasionally fresh snowfall. The Sela Tunnel keeps the main road more reliable.
  • Bum La generally operates, with snow still possible. Permits are processed in Tawang and can be suspended for weather or army reasons.
  • Rhododendrons start flowering at altitude through April and into May, depending on the year.
  • Nights in Tawang still drop to around freezing, so heated rooms matter.

Indian visitors need an Arunachal ILP, and foreign nationals need a PAP; our Arunachal ILP guide explains how. For a full town-and-surroundings picture, see our Tawang travel guide. Check current status before you travel for road and pass conditions.

Meghalaya in April

Meghalaya in April is a mix of clear mornings and building storms.

Shillong is at its most pleasant: about 14–23 °C, fresh green on the pines after the dry months, and Shad Suk Mynsiem if your dates align.

Sohra is getting wet again. Waterfalls start to fill after the dry months, but views can fog over in the afternoon. Go early.

The Umngot at Dawki is usually still clear in the first half of April. Storms upstream can cloud it for a day or two, and by late April and May it becomes less reliable. If the clear water is a must, go early in the month.

Nongriat is a good walk in April: the streams are starting to rise, and the steps are mostly dry in the mornings.

Majuli and Upper Assam at Bihu

If Bihu is your reason to travel, Upper Assam is where it feels closest to its village roots. Majuli, the river island reached by ferry from Nimati Ghat near Jorhat, celebrates in its satras and Mising villages, and the island is still green before the monsoon floods. Sivasagar, the old Ahom capital, has its own Bihu stages near the tanks and monuments.

April is also a comfortable month for the ferry, with river levels still moderate. Ferry timings can change with water levels and storms, so leave the afternoon free on crossing days. Two nights in Majuli gives time for a satra visit, a mask-making village and an evening Bihu gathering without rushing.

Jorhat's tea gardens are in their first flush season around this time, and a garden walk in the cool of the morning pairs well with the island.

What's open, what to expect

Place April status Note
Kaziranga Open, final weeks Closes for the monsoon from about May
Manas and Pobitora Open Hot afternoons; morning visits best
Majuli Open Bihu in the satras and villages
Dawki Open Clearest in the first half of April
Sela Pass Open, snow possible Early-month snow on slopes
Bum La Usually operating Weather and army orders decide
Sohra viewpoints Open Afternoon cloud returning

All of these change year to year; check current status before you travel.

Crowds, prices and booking

April is a shoulder month. Indian school summer holidays generally start in May, so April sees fewer family groups than late May and June, and fewer than October or December.

  • Bihu week in Assam: book Guwahati, Jorhat and Majuli stays 4–6 weeks ahead.
  • Kaziranga: weekday safaris are usually easy to get with 2–3 weeks' notice; weekends fill sooner.
  • Tawang: April is a busy month for domestic travel in Arunachal. Book heated rooms 4–6 weeks out.
  • Shillong and Sohra: 3–4 weeks is usually enough outside long weekends.

Packing for April

  • Assam: light cotton, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, a light rain shell.
  • Meghalaya: a light jacket, a compact umbrella, shoes with good grip for wet steps.
  • Tawang and Sela: thermal top, padded or down jacket, gloves, cap and sunglasses for glare off the snow.
  • Everywhere: a refillable water bottle and oral rehydration sachets for hot days on the plains.

How we'd plan it

For a first April trip, we like a 7-night loop that moves from plains to hills as the days warm up:

  1. Night 1, Guwahati. Arrive, Kamakhya in the evening. If it is 14 or 15 April, catch a Bihu stage.
  2. Nights 2–3, Kaziranga. Morning safaris on both days; afternoon tea-garden walk or rest.
  3. Nights 4–5, Shillong. Via Guwahati, about 5–6 hours from Kaziranga. Shad Suk Mynsiem if the dates match, plus Laitlum and Elephant Falls.
  4. Night 6, Sohra. Early start for viewpoints before the afternoon cloud.
  5. Night 7, Shillong or Guwahati. Dawki on the way back if the water is clear.

That shape is close to our Assam and Meghalaya Highlights package. If snow and monasteries matter more than waterfalls, swap the Meghalaya half for our Tawang via Dirang and Sela package, and do Kaziranga on the way back. Our Northeast festival calendar shows what else falls in spring.

Tell us your April dates on the contact page and we will check Bihu programmes, Kaziranga's closing date and Sela conditions for your week.

Good to know

Questions people ask

01Is April a good time to visit Northeast India?

Yes. April combines Kaziranga's last safari weeks, Bihu in Assam, clear spring days in Tawang and mild weather in Shillong. The trade-offs are rising heat on the Assam plains, afternoon or evening thunderstorms, and heavy pre-monsoon showers in Sohra. Crowds are lighter than in October or the December holidays.

02When is Rongali Bihu in 2026?

Rongali, or Bohag, Bihu marks the Assamese New Year. Goru Bihu, when cattle are bathed and honoured, falls on 14 April, and Manuh Bihu, the New Year's Day, on 15 April. Community stages, Husori groups and Bihu dances continue for several days afterwards. Local programme dates vary, so check current status before you travel.

03Is Kaziranga open in April?

Yes. April is usually the last full month of the tourist season before Kaziranga closes for the monsoon from about May. The grass is short after the controlled winter burning, so rhinos, buffaloes and elephants are easier to see. Afternoons are hot, so the morning safaris are more comfortable. Check current status before you travel.

04Is there snow in Tawang in April?

Snow in Tawang town is unlikely by April, but Sela Pass at about 4,170 m can still have snow on the slopes, especially in the first half of the month. Bum La may also have snow. Days in Tawang are cool and bright, and nights still drop close to freezing, so pack warm layers.

05What is the weather in Shillong in April?

Long-term averages put Shillong at about 23 °C in the day and 14 °C at night, with around 130 mm of rain in the month. Mornings are usually clear, and thunderstorms often roll in during the afternoon or evening. A light jacket and a small umbrella cover most days.

06Is Dawki river clear in April?

Often, in the first half of the month. The Umngot keeps much of its winter clarity into early April, but pre-monsoon storms in the hills can turn it cloudy for a day or two. By late April and May the water is less reliable. For the clearest water, visit early in the month.

07What is Shad Suk Mynsiem?

Shad Suk Mynsiem is the Khasi spring dance festival held in Shillong in April, usually over three days at the Weiking ground in Jaiaw. Women in traditional dress and jewellery dance in the centre while men dance in a circle around them. Dates are announced each year, so check current status before you travel.

08How hot is Kaziranga in April?

Days on the Assam plains usually reach the low 30s °C in April, with humid afternoons and occasional evening thunderstorms. Mornings are pleasant. We book the early jeep or elephant safari, rest in the middle of the day and do a short afternoon drive or a tea garden walk once it cools.

09What should I pack for the Northeast in April?

Light cotton clothes and sun protection for Assam, a light jacket and umbrella for Shillong and Sohra, and warm layers, including a down or padded jacket and gloves, for Tawang and Sela. Add sturdy walking shoes, a rain shell for thunderstorms and insect repellent for Kaziranga evenings.
