The route, night by night
Highest point on this trip: 1,965 m
This 8 nights / 9 days family holiday starts with rhinos at Pobitora, near Guwahati, and two nights in Kaziranga, then climbs to Shillong and spends two unhurried nights in Sohra among caves and waterfalls. It ends with a Brahmaputra cruise in Guwahati. Drives are short on most days, and every sight suits children from about four.
We built this trip for families with children who want animals first and waterfalls second. The first safari comes on day 2 at Pobitora, a small sanctuary with Assam's second-largest rhino population about 1.5 hours from Guwahati, so even a child who is bored by long drives sees a rhino early. Kaziranga follows with two nights and three rides. Then the hills: two nights in Shillong and two in Sohra, where caves, viewpoints and falls are close to the road.
The pace is gentle. Most days have 2–4 hours in the car, with one 6.5-hour day from Kaziranga to Shillong broken by lunch. Rooms are family rooms or interconnecting rooms where hotels have them. The trip runs from November to April, when the parks are open and Meghalaya is mostly dry; Kaziranga's dates are set each year, so check current status before you travel.

Day 1Arrive in Guwahati
- Guwahati
- 55 m
- 25 km · 1 hr
- Dinner
We meet you at Guwahati Airport and drive into the city, about an hour. After check-in and lunch, visit the Assam State Zoo, a large, shaded zoo with one-horned rhinos, hoolock gibbons and tigers, which gets children excited for the safaris ahead. Parents who want to visit Kamakhya temple on Nilachal hill can go in the morning or late afternoon; the general queue is free and can be booked online, special darshan costs ₹501 per person, and hours are roughly 8 am to 1 pm and 2.30 to 5.15 pm. Early dinner at the hotel.
Day 2Pobitora safari and on to Kaziranga
- Kaziranga
- 70 m
- 215 km · 5 hrs with the safari
- Breakfast, Dinner
Leave at 6 am for Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, about 1.5 hours east of Guwahati. Pobitora is small and flat, with Assam's second-largest rhino population, so a morning jeep or elephant ride almost always brings rhinos close; you may also see wild buffalo and water birds. After breakfast near the sanctuary, drive east through Nagaon to Kohora at the edge of Kaziranga, about 3.5 hours with a lunch stop. Check in by mid-afternoon and let the children play. In the evening, the Kaziranga orchid and biodiversity park nearby has an orchid house and a Bihu dance show.
Day 3Kaziranga safaris
- Kaziranga
- 70 m
- 50 km · local
- Breakfast, Dinner
Elephant rides run only in the Central (Kohora) and Western (Bagori) ranges, in one-hour batches between about 5.30 and 7.30 am, and children rarely forget riding into the tall grass beside a rhino. Back for breakfast and a rest. In the afternoon, take a jeep safari in the Central range from about 1.30 pm, and if the children are still keen, we can add a second jeep in the Western range the next morning at extra cost. Park entry is ₹100 per Indian adult and ₹650 per foreign adult. Evening at the lodge.
Day 4Kaziranga to Shillong
- Shillong
- 1,525 m
- 250 km · 6.5 hrs
- Breakfast, Dinner
The one long day. After breakfast, if the children want one more safari, a morning jeep in the Western range from about 7.30 am is possible before we set off. Otherwise, leave at 8.30 am and drive west on NH-27 to Nagaon, then to Jorabat and up NH-6 into the Khasi Hills, with lunch and a couple of breaks. Arrive in Shillong, at about 1,525 m, in the late afternoon; it will feel cool after the plains. Meghalaya requires hotels to register every guest on the state tourism app, so keep IDs for all family members handy.
Day 5Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls and Don Bosco
- Shillong
- 1,525 m
- 40 km · local
- Breakfast, Dinner
Start at Shillong Peak, at 1,965 m the highest point near the city and inside an Air Force area; carry photo ID and check current status, as access has been restricted at times. Then Elephant Falls, three tiers reached by steps with handrails, about 10 minutes down. After lunch, spend the afternoon at the Don Bosco Museum of Indigenous Cultures, seven floors of Northeast life with costumes, instruments and a rooftop skywalk that children love. In the evening, walk around Ward's Lake with its footbridge and paddle boats.
Day 6Shillong to Sohra
- Sohra
- 1,484 m
- 60 km · 2 hrs
- Breakfast, Dinner
A short drive of about 55 km to Sohra (Cherrapunji), with a stop at the Mawkdok Dympep valley viewpoint, where children can watch the ziplines across the gorge; the ziplines are for older children and adults at extra cost. After lunch, walk through Mawsmai Cave, a short, lit limestone cave with a one-way path of about 20 minutes and a couple of low squeezes. End the day at the Seven Sisters falls viewpoint at sunset. Sohra has some of the highest rainfall on earth, so pack umbrellas and light rain jackets even in winter.
Day 7Nohkalikai, Arwah Cave and a slow Sohra day
- Sohra
- 1,484 m
- 40 km · local
- Breakfast, Dinner
A slow day with no long drive. In the morning, see Nohkalikai Falls, a 340 m plunge into a green pool, from the fenced viewpoint; there is a small play area and snack stalls nearby. Then Arwah Cave, reached by a paved path of about 1 km, where fossils are set in the limestone walls, a hit with curious children. After lunch, rest at the hotel or visit the Sohra eco park for views over the plains of Bangladesh on a clear day. Evening free; many Sohra resorts have lawns where children can run about.
Day 8Sohra to Guwahati via Umiam Lake
- Guwahati
- 55 m
- 155 km · 4.5 hrs
- Breakfast, Dinner
Leave Sohra after breakfast and drive through Shillong to Umiam Lake, where children can take a short pedal-boat or speedboat ride at the water sports centre at extra cost. Continue down NH-6 to Guwahati, about 3 hours, for a late lunch. In the evening, take a Brahmaputra sunset cruise from the riverfront, about 90 minutes on the water, with snacks and sometimes Bihu music on board. It is a relaxed way to end the trip, and the airport is close enough for any morning flight tomorrow.
Day 9Depart Guwahati
- Departure
- 55 m
- 25 km · 1 hr
- Breakfast
After breakfast, check out and drive to Guwahati Airport, about 25 km from the city; allow an hour for traffic. If your flight is in the afternoon, visit the Assam State Museum near Dighalipukhuri tank, which has sculptures, textiles and a tribal village gallery, or the riverside Sukreswar ghat. Both are easy with children and take an hour or two. Our driver drops you at the terminal, and we stay on WhatsApp until you board. For your next trip, ask us about Majuli or Tawang when the children are a bit older.

Northeast Family Holiday: questions
01What is the best Northeast holiday for a family with young children?
A Guwahati, Kaziranga, Shillong and Sohra loop suits most families. It needs no permits, drives are mostly 2–4 hours, and children see rhinos early at Pobitora and Kaziranga before the hills. Caves, falls and viewpoints in Sohra are close to the road with rails on steps. Eight nights allows two slow nights in Sohra.
02What is Pobitora and why include it?
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is a small, flat sanctuary about 1.5 hours from Guwahati with Assam's second-largest rhino population. Because it is compact, rhinos are usually seen within minutes of setting out. It gives children a guaranteed-feeling first safari on day 2, before the bigger grasslands of Kaziranga. Its season runs about November to April.
03Can children ride elephants in Kaziranga?
Children usually can ride with a parent, though each range sets its own age rules. Elephant rides run only in the Central (Kohora) and Western (Bagori) ranges, in one-hour batches between about 5.30 and 7.30 am. Seats are limited and sell out in peak weeks, so we book them as soon as you confirm.
04Is Shillong safe for families?
Yes. Shillong is a friendly city and families travel here all year. Meghalaya requires every hotel and homestay to register guests on the state tourism app, which adds a check at the front desk. As anywhere, keep valuables close in crowded Police Bazaar. Our driver stays with you for all sightseeing.
05How long is the drive from Kaziranga to Shillong?
Kaziranga to Shillong is about 250 km and takes around 6.5 hours, mostly on a four-lane highway through Nagaon and Jorabat before the climb up NH-6. We stop for lunch and a couple of breaks. It is the only long drive of this trip; every other day is 4.5 hours or less.
06What should we pack for children on this trip?
Pack warm jackets and caps for Shillong and Sohra evenings, light layers for the plains, rain jackets or umbrellas for Sohra, comfortable walking shoes with grip for caves, and neutral colours for safaris. Bring motion-sickness tablets for the hill roads and any regular medicines. Child seats are available on request.
07Do we need any permits for this family holiday?
No. Assam and Meghalaya need no permit for Indian or foreign visitors. You pay park entry at Pobitora and Kaziranga; at Kaziranga it is ₹100 per Indian adult and ₹650 per foreign adult. Meghalaya hotels register every guest on the state tourism app, so carry photo ID for adults and ID or birth certificates for children.
08When is the best time for a Northeast family holiday?
November to April. Both parks are open, Meghalaya is mostly dry and days are pleasant on the plains. School winter breaks in December and January are popular, so book early. The monsoon, June to September, closes Kaziranga and brings very heavy rain to Sohra, so we do not run this trip then.
09How much does the Northeast family holiday cost?
This 8 nights / 9 days trip starts from ₹34,500 per person on twin sharing, with standard hotels, breakfast and dinner, a private car, a Pobitora safari, an elephant ride and a jeep safari in Kaziranga, and a Brahmaputra cruise. Children's prices depend on age and bedding. Flights, park entry fees and lunches are extra.
